Circular route from Billebaum to Spillberg, Geissfels, Schlossberg and Wuestenberg

The undulating paths you will follow on this lovely circular route, starting from the Billebaum car park, will take you to the heart of several Alemannic legends (La Spill, a 10-metre-high vertical monolith), to the Geissfels (a magnificent rock with a 40-metre drop and a remarkable view over Dabo), then, in the second stage, to the ruined Ochsenstein Castle (three 12th-century castles built on three sandstone spurs, with the summit area off-limits) and, continuing on from there, the long rocky plateau of the Schlossberg. Finally, the third stage takes in the Wuestenberg plateau, an ancient oppidum and Celtic place of worship (pagan wall, druid stone), the southern end of which begins with the Krappenfels, an enormous rock offering magnificent views, particularly of the Dabo rock.

Description of the walk

Park at the Billebaum crossroads car park, accessible from the village of Reinhardsmunster.

Red Rectangle GR®53signposting

(S/E) From the car park, head towards the Haberacker Forest House via the path running alongside the Stambach to Reinhardsmunster Forest Road. The path joins the road further on. Continue along the road for a few hundred metres.

Blue Rectangle GR®531 signpost

(1) Take the path marked “Spill” on the left to climb up the narrow path and reach a small meadow and its multi-directional crossroads.

(2) Turn left at the Rocher de La Spill, following the “Spill rocher 5 min” signpost (a magnificent monolith about 10 m high).

(3) Return to the multi-way junction.

(2) Continue straight ahead towards Geisfels and reach the summit (where there is a bench and a beautiful view, particularly of the Dabo rock).

(4) Retrace your steps slightly, for about 40 m, and take the narrow, steep path on the right to reach, below, the “Gloriette du Geissfelswasen” (shelter and picnic area).

Red Rectangle GR® 53 signposting

(5) Continue to the right along the forest track signposted “Haberacker” and, after about 250 m, turn right onto the forest path signposted “Haberacker”, which joins the Stambach to Reinhardsmunster Forest Road.

(6) Follow it to the right, towards the Haberacker Forest House.

(1) Continue straight ahead at the fork in the two forest roads, following the “MF Haberacker” signposting.

Blue Rectangle GR®531 signpost

(7) Turn left onto the forest road, pass the Haberacker Forest House, and continue to the last building.

(8) Leave the forest road to the right onto the forest path signposted "Ochsenstein Krappenfels". The forest path, with a moderate gradient, leads to the ruined Ochsenstein Castle, which is in fact a row of three small semi-troglodytic castles built on three sandstone spurs (it is no longer possible to visit the upper sections).

(9) Continue along the long rocky plateau of the Schlossberg, then descend to the Krappenfels Pass via the narrow, winding path.

(10) Continue straight on along the path leading up to the summit of the Krappenfels Rock, signposted "Krappenfels Wuestenberg".
At the summit of Krappenfels (bench and lovely view over Dabo). Continue along the path across the Wuestenberg plateau to reach some Celtic remains (pagan wall, then the Druids’ stone, slightly off to one side).

(11) Retrace your steps and turn left, then right, onto the winding descent of the Wuestenberg. The sloping path initially crosses the Chemin Forestier du Gibraltar and reaches a fork.

No signposting.

(12) Leave the GR®531 and continue straight ahead. The path first crosses the trail marked with a Blue Rectangle crossed by a white line, before joining the Schlossberg Forest Track below.

(13) Follow it to the right, gently uphill, towards the Billebaum crossroads to reach the Stambach to Reinhardsmunster Forest Road.

(14) Continue straight ahead, passing the Billebaum tree (a remarkable beech), and reach the Billebaum crossroads car park (S/E).
