Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Saint-André-le-Gaz town hall.

(S/E) Take the road southwards to the junction. Turn left into Rue Gambetta. Follow it to Rue Pierre Loti.

(1) Turn right and walk down the street to the level crossing. Take great care when crossing the railway tracks. Continue along the path, then join a road which leads you to the D1006.

(2) Cross the main road, then at the bend, take the path that goes straight ahead.
On your left, you’ll pass a wetland area dotted with hazel, poplar and alder trees. You’ll come to a small road; continue straight on, passing the Molières farm, then rejoin the Route du Passage. Turn left until you reach the D73.

(3) Turn left, then take the first road on the right which climbs towards Valencogne.
Take the first road on the left (Chemin de la Grepatière) until you reach a bend on the left.

(4) Turn onto the path on the right which climbs alongside the Ruisseau des Beaufroides. Follow this lovely path under the trees. Cross the Chemin de la Chapelle. Continue climbing until you reach a small tarmac road.

(5) Turn right, and at the fork, veer left. Follow this road to the village of Valencogne. At the village entrance sign, you will see the statue of Notre-Dame des Vignes on your right. Continue to the junction with the D17d.

(6) From here, follow theGR®65marked in red and white (the Via Podiensis, which starts in Geneva and ends in Santiago de Compostela). Turn left. At the Croix du Brocard, turn left and continue along the small road.

(7) When you reach a hairpin bend to the left, take the path on the right. At Les Allimards, you’ll come to a road. Continue to follow the GR®. Cross the hamlet, then carry on.

(8) At the second three-way junction, take the path on the left.

(9) When you reach the Route du Vieux Saint-Ondras, head down to the left. Keep following the GR®. At the Impasse des Promeneurs, leave theGR® and continue straight on along the road. You will reach the castle. Walk along its outer wall. Head down the road to the D73.

(10) Cross the D-road to reach Le Gaz via a pleasant road lined with old trees (oaks, ash and maple) and a few walnut trees.

(11) Take care when crossing the D1006 (cars come round the bend quickly).
Take the stony path. At the first junction, turn left towards La Bourbre. Turn right just before the small river. Follow the path that runs alongside a poplar plantation. Go under the railway line, then rejoin the road.

(12) Turn left towards Saint-André-le-Gaz. Take the first street on the left. Follow Rue Musset and return to the original junction.

(1) Follow the route back. Turn right onto Rue Lavoisier. Go past the roundabout, then turn left between the town hall and the fire station. Return to the starting car park (S/E).

Nice, but too much tarmac and asphalt – and watch out, the end of the path leads right down to the water’s edge

A route that takes you through both shade and sunshine, which is lovely.
Lots of tarmac, and the section between point 9 and point 11 is quite fast; you need to ride on the right or left of the road depending on the bends.
I took a slight detour after point 10 at the Clandon stream; I turned left onto the north side to follow it, and then 600 metres further on you need to take the path on the right to reach point 11. This avoids the traffic.

The section of the route between the car park at St André le Gaz and the gas bridge is poorly signposted (we got lost) and is of little interest, particularly as it consists solely of tarmac roads. On the other hand, the rest of the route east of the RD 1006, through the valleys and hillsides of Valencogne and Saint Ondras and along several watercourses, is easy, picturesque and relaxing. A real treat for lovers of green, peaceful spaces, despite the long stretches of tarmac.

There are far too many tarmac roads on the route, particularly the entire final stretch of the return journey

Far too much tarmac. Apart from that, a very pleasant walk.

Good paths or quiet roads.
The marshy section towards St André le Gaz is a bit tricky to cross the day after it has rained; like any good marsh, it’s very damp!
