Description of the walk

Parking is available along the starting path, on the D22 between Nanteuil-la-Forêt and Fleury-la-Rivière.

(S/E) Take the wide stony path from the car park and follow it for around 2 km.

(1) Shortly after passing under the high-voltage power line, leave the wide stony path and turn left onto the woodland track heading west (signposted ‘Forêt de Chaumuzy’).
During a recent reconnaissance hike along this route, the path was quite obstructed by numerous fallen branches lying across it and the ground was rather muddy; taking the path that runs parallel to it, about 150 m just to the north, offered a good alternative as it was in better condition (though this may always change following forestry work or heavy rain).

(2) As you emerge from the undergrowth, turn right onto a wide track, follow it and you will reach the junction with a path in the Bois de Courton.

(3) Leave the track and take a path on the left (which may be difficult to see due to forestry work but is definitely there). Head towards the edge of a field, stay along the edge to reach the hamlet of Paradis.

(4) Turn left and, as you leave the hamlet, just at the bend to the right, take the path, following the road for a few metres towards Belval. Follow this path into the small valley through the woodland and cross the Ruisseau du Marais. Then head back up through the fields. Reach the crossroads of paths marked by a sign: La Poterne.

(5) Turn left and walk alongside the vineyards. Cross La Poterne and leave the hamlet to reach a four-way junction.

(6) Follow the road that branches off to the right towards the south and cross the woods and the Ruisseau de la Petite Vente. You will come to another path junction in the field.

(7) Take the left-hand path, heading due east, and follow the edge of the Bois Brunetaux before entering the woods. Continue straight on, passing under the power lines, until you reach a multi-way junction.

(8) Turn onto thesecond path on the left, heading north-east; follow it, turn sharply right and continue on to return to the car park on the D 22 between Nanteuil-la-Forêt and Fleury-la-Rivière (S/E).

Notes

There are no water sources; the stream you cross may not always have water in it.
There are numerous alternative paths allowing you to vary this walk as you please.
Make sure you protect yourself from mosquitoes, as the tracks are often blocked by large puddles of water – these are easy to bypass but attract insects.

Worth a visit

Between (3) and (4), after the forest, a lovely path leads to the hamlet of Paradis and its beautiful views of the Marne Valley.

Hello,
As soon as I get back from my trip, I’ll check out this hike.

Update:
I’ve just done this hike again (on 26 October 2024) and, as it turns out, forestry work has made access to the path (at point 3) not impossible, but harder to find (and cluttered with fallen branches).
I have therefore altered the route at this point to avoid the area where tractors have been used to haul logs (and have consequently caused quite a bit of damage to the undergrowth there). Instead of taking the path originally indicated, you must now head into the forest along the path just before it (the one now shown on the route). Trees felled during the work are still lying across the entrance to this path, but they do not really block the way. You simply need to step over them and walk alongside them to reach the path.

Please note: the path is currently impassable (August 2024); the route is completely blocked by forestry work that has left the area in a right mess.
It is impossible to enter the forest at kilometre 3.
It’s a shame, as the route looked promising...

Hello,
I’ve just updated the elevation calculations and, as you say, the total ascent is 120m
Thank you for pointing that out.

Note: the elevation gain shown by VisoRando is 526 m
My Garmin GPS, however, only records an elevation gain of 112 m.
I’m used to using it and comparing its ‘readings’ with sites like OpenRunner or Google Earth; they always match up.
This difference—from a simple to a fourfold increase—leads me to believe that VisoRando is giving an incorrect figure.

Hello,

It’s a lovely spot, not very busy, and one to avoid at all costs during the hunting season.

At the point (1), amongst the conifers, there is a memorial stone in honour of the soldiers of the 35th Infantry Regiment who fell between 17 July and 3 August 1918 in the Bois de Courton. There were many casualties in these woods.
