On the banks of the Rhône from Fort l'Écluse

Open from mid-June to mid-October, during the Fort's opening hours.

A trail combining history and nature, starting within the fort itself. The final ascent rewards walkers with an exceptional panorama before descending back to the fort.

Starting from Fort l'Écluse when it is open (from June to September), the path enters the forest before reaching the banks of the Rhône. It winds its way between stone steps, medieval ruins and wooded passages to the heights of Léaz, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Rhône valley. The route then continues to the heights of the Upper Fort, offering a panoramic view of the Rhône gorge, the Vuache and the Étournel. The descent to the Lower Fort concludes this circular route rich in history and emotion.

Description of the walk

From Valserhône, take the D1206 towards Collonges. Stop at the tunnel in the Fort l'Écluse car park.

(S/E) From the fort car park, cross the lower courtyard and exit through the Porte de Genève. Continue along the path that leads to the road.

(1) Turn sharply right and head towards the banks of the Rhône.

(2) Stay on this path which runs along the banks before climbing towards Lavoux and passing under the railway line. You will come to a path.

(3) Turn left. Keep left at the next junction and cross the first railway line via a level crossing. You will arrive at a bridge.

(4) This time, pass under the railway line. Continue to the ruins of the Moulins de Condière.

(5) Then descend slightly towards the banks of the Rhône, then climb. Keep to the right at the start of the climb. Towards the end, keep to the left to reach a narrow street and its viewpoint.

(6) Continue straight ahead. Pass in front of Léaz Town Hall, then in front of the wash house, staying on the same street. Don't hesitate to stop in this charming village. Keep to the right at the wash house on Chemin de la Stèle. Continue to its terminus on the D1206.

(7) First turn left then right. At the end of the lane, take the path that starts on the left. The climb offers bucolic views as you pass through the meadows. Pass under the power lines, then continue straight ahead to the road. Follow it to the first path on the left.

(8) Take this path. Cross a track, then the road again to reach the heights of Les Marais. You will arrive at a junction with a track.

(9) Continue straight ahead. Keep going straight ahead until you reach the next path, located after the reservoirs, towards Longeray.

(10) Turn left onto this path and continue along it. Continue until you reach the high-voltage power line.

(11) Take the path on the right that descends steeply to the starting point (S/E).

Worth a visit

Les Moulins de Condière: in medieval times, under the authority of the Count of Savoy, a small industry used the hydraulic energy of the Nans des 3 leats.
The Moulins de Condière site already existed in the14th century. For centuries, a ferry allowed people to cross the Rhône at this point.

A pleasant hike, but dependent on Fort l'Ecluse's opening hours. However, part of the route is very poorly signposted, so it's a good thing we followed the detailed description. Next time, we'll try to do the route in reverse, returning via the Rhône gorge and finishing at the fort (note that it closes at the end of September!).

A beautiful circular route indeed, with little elevation change; beautiful landscapes and varied views; difficult without your description as there are almost no signposts!
Please note: the lower lock building only opens at 10.30 a.m., so it is not possible to cross before this time as described (but you can take the small road on the right from the car park, losing part of the path along the Rhône, which is what we did).
Thank you.
