Description of the walk

Coming from Toulouse via the Chemin des Étroits which runs alongside the Ariège, leave the church on your left then, at the small roundabout, head towards the sports centre on the right. Park in the car park on the left.

(S/E) Take the path at the end of the car park, turn right onto Chemin de Castelvieil. Reach the right bank of the Ariège. Continue left to follow the bank of the Ariège. Carry on to reach the junction with a very small, barely visible path.

(1) Take this path to the left to begin a steep climb. Be careful, as this path may be very slippery if it has rained the day before. Keep to the right at the next junction to cross the woods. Head up to the ridge to come out onto the tarmac road known as Chemin des Roches.

(2) Take this road, passing the next two paths on your right and then on your left, before turning right onto the downhill path. You will reach thefirst houses of Balandra.

(3) Turn left onto the small path leading down. Make a wide circular loop to the right, reaching a four-way junction on the ridge.

(4) Here you have two options:
- turn right and continue along the ridge to reach the bend in the Ariège. This route is recommended if the Ariège is in flood.
- continue straight ahead and, at the end of the descent, reach the bank of the Ariège; then turn right and follow the Ariège, reaching the bend opposite the village of La Hière.

(5) Continue along the right bank to reach the bend opposite Justaret, the junction for the alternative route.

(6) Stay on the right bank to return to the junction passed on the way out.

(1) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction to return to the Lacroix-Falgarde car park (S/E).

Muddy path, steep and slippery trails after rain; bring walking poles if necessary.
The Ramier area is prone to flooding and is therefore not always passable.

Worth a visit

Lovely views along the ridge and by the river.

some descriptions of the route are incomplete, particularly at the end of Chemin des Roches: the name of the road would be useful.
not very busy, except for the path near the Ariège: very busy (Sunday)

The walk as a whole is really lovely, apart from the section between points 2 and 3 on tarmac – either between houses or running alongside the main road...
The climb is a bit steep, but there are steps to help.
From point 3 onwards, you’re in the shade in the woods or along the banks of the Ariège – it’s absolutely brilliant in this weather.
Take care on the descent as it can be slippery in wet weather.

Signposting is clear and there aren’t many people out today.

A lovely circular route, with the second section running along the banks of the Garonne. Half the route follows single-track trails. The first climb is very steep and is impassable in wet weather.

Point 1, ‘steep climb on the left’, is worth noting as it’s easy to miss.
A very pleasant walk, particularly along the banks of the Ariège with its very peaceful beaches; but also through all the woodland areas.
