Circular route starting from Orbey

Starting from Orbey, this is an interesting hike thanks to its diversity and magnificent views. During the day, you’ll come across two sites named after rocks, and admire forests with their undergrowth—sometimes open, sometimes dense and serving as shelter for game, or even covered in moss—all along a very pleasant path. A moment to reflect on history as you pass through the battlefields near the Linge; the 1914–1918 war. Then superb views of the surrounding valleys and mountains.

Description of the walk

After parking, head to the start point at the corner of La Bonne Auberge (81 Rue Charles de Gaulle).

(S/E) At the corner of La Bonne Auberge, take the small alleyway and cross the river, then turn left towards Tannach (red dirt path). Follow this path; further on, continue right towards Pierre du Loup (marked with a Blue Rectangle with a White Rectangle in the centre) and climb straight up towards the houses, skirting them on the right.

About fifty metres past the houses, pay attention: the path continues to the left. When you reach a small flat area, Pierre du Loup is 100 metres to the right.

(1) Return to the path, continue and keep an eye out for the markings which, after a right-left turn, rejoin the Blue Rectangle markings; follow the signs for Pierre Tremblante.

Proceed with care to ensure you follow the correct route (still following the Blue Rectangle). After passing under the high-voltage power lines, cross the first path and, at the second, turn right for about fifty metres to rejoin the path, which continues climbing to the left. Keep climbing and, once you reach level ground, you will come to the remarkable Pierres Tremblantes.

(2) Arrive at the Ferrebeuf crossroads, cross over and take the path climbing up opposite, still following the Blue Rectangle, towards Rain des Chênes and Baerenstall. After a short climb, continue for a while on level ground along the path. When you reach a road, turn right and follow the roadside for about 400 metres. Take the Blue Rectangle path on the left, which continues into the forest. A little further on, join a path and continue to the right towards Glasborn and Hautes-Huttes. You will reach Baerenstall, a German military cemetery from the First World War.

(3) Continue straight ahead behind the picnic tables, following the Yellow Rectangle, and climb straight up to the summit, continuing straight on. You will then pass a site with military remains from the First World War.

(4) After a short, fairly steep and winding descent, you’ll reach a crossroads with several directions. Take the path that leads into the meadow, marked with a Yellow Rectangle, towards Glasborn / Wettstein / Hautes-Huttes. Continue past the Glasborn farmhouse inn.

(5) Take the path leading to Wettstein (French military cemetery 1914–1918).

(6) Cross the Wettstein Pass junction and take the path opposite, which continues towards Hautes-Huttes / Lac du Forlet, marked with a Yellow Rectangle. After walking along a very flat path, you will reach the ‘Carrefour des Hautes-Huttes’ sign, fixed to a wooden post, with several possible directions.

(7) Follow the Yellow Triangle markings towards Gazon du Fain, Soultzerer Eck and Lac du Forlet; take the path that climbs straight up after passing the Lac du Forlet sign on the left. You will reach the junction at a place called Kraywasen d'en haut.

(8) Continue to the right towards Lac Noir, following the Red Disc markings. After about 1 km, a path crosses the trail; follow it by turning right, towards Lac Noir and Orbey, following the Red Rectangle markings with a white centre. You will arrive at Lac Noir.

(9) Cross the small bridge over the dam and, at the corner of the wooden shelter, take the path down to the right towards Orbey, marked with a Red Rectangle with a White Rectangle. You will reach the Abbaye de Pairis equestrian centre.

(10) Stay on the path marked with a Red Rectangle with a White Rectangle, passing through the hamlets of Le Lait and Le Faing before reaching the car park at the start (S/E).

Hello,
A hike enjoyed in glorious sunshine. A wonderful variety of flora and landscapes, and historic sites.
Quite a few people around Lac Noir, but that’s to be expected. At the 616-metre mark after Le Lait, I decided to follow the blue signposts to see the little chapel and pass by Sacré-Cœur (Christ on top of the hill, with a lovely view over Orbey); this didn’t add to the length of the route.
Took 6 hours 50 minutes excluding breaks; I didn’t find it particularly difficult, apart from perhaps the rather stony descent to Lac Noir – you just need to take your time.
For those with dogs, make sure you bring enough water for the section up to Lac Noir; apart from a few puddles, there’s no water. After that, there’s a succession of streams for the second part.
A lovely hike that I’ll be doing again this year so I can show it to my family.
A lovely day – thank you for this beautiful route.

We did this route on 3 July and had a brilliant day out on this very varied route, which alternated between dense and sparse woodland and stubble fields, with superb views. There are plenty of points of interest; we highly recommend it and would like to thank Netra for sharing it.

A lovely walk through stunning scenery: forests, stubble fields and meadows, and places steeped in history. A lovely but also very interesting walk for those interested in the events of the First World War.

Everything was perfect except for the start in Orbey – there are no signposts after crossing the bridge over the river => turn left. A magnificent walk that takes in all the most beautiful scenery of the Vosges – a real must-do.

Hello,

Is the red ‘circle’ a disc or a ring?
