The banks of the Odet and Mont Frugy as seen from the Créac’h Gwen leisure centre

A semi-urban route via the Créac’h Gwen leisure centre, then along the Odet via the towpath. The climb to Le Frugy, which overlooks the town, offers a beautiful view.
The return route takes you through Locmaria, Quimper’s historic district with its Romanesque church and former priory.
There are numerous information boards detailing the town’s history.

Description of the walk

Park at the Aquarive Swimming Pool car park in the Créac’h Gwen leisure area.
Access by bus via line B.

(S/E) Leave the car park by going under the footbridge leading to the swimming pool, then turn right onto the pavement of Rue de Kérogan.

(1) Continue along this street, passing the leisure centre and then some office buildings, until you reach a roundabout. Carry on along a small road through a wooded area.

(2) Turn right onto a path leading down to a monumental fountain (Fontaine Sainte-Anne or de Keribin), erected following a tragic event, and continue along the boardwalk which takes you through the reed bed along the banks of the Odet, emerging near the roundabout you passed earlier. Retrace your steps.

(1) Turn left, go round the back of the swimming pool, cross this stretch of the Odet known as Plage des Gueux (see during the walk), continue past the tennis courts and arrive at the water sports centre.

(3) Turn left to follow the edge of the lake, continue along Boulevard de Créac’h Gwen, pass a roundabout and arrive at a path on the left.

(4) Turn left onto the access road to Château de Lanniron. At the entrance gate, turn right and follow the path running alongside the wooded grounds of Manoir de Poulguinan, which has been visible since Storm Ciaran in October 2023. Walk past a memorial stone marking the site of a former prisoner-of-war camp between 1940 and 1946 (see during the walk), then climb the steps to reach the Pont de Poulguinan, the last bridge built in 1976 to cross the Odet.

(5) Cross the bridge via the pedestrian crossing and, at the far end, head down to the towpath. Turn left, pass under the bridge and follow this wide, well-maintained path featuring information panels (caution: area frequented by cyclists and young children on bikes). Pass the Square des Acadiens, the former landing stage for trips down the Odet (view of the Locmaria district on the opposite bank), then continue along the Quai Neuf until you reach a footbridge on the right.

(6) Take this footbridge (offering a lovely view of the river and the cathedral spires) and, at the other end, turn left onto Allée du Locmaria, which runs alongside the river. Follow this path, which is bordered by a car park on your right. All along the way, numerous information panels tell you the history of the town. Go past the bridge opposite the courthouse and continue to the next one. At the traffic lights, cross diagonally to the right towards the former tourist office, now the coach operators’ reception.

(7) Walk past this building, cross the esplanade and take the steps leading up to the Promenade du Mont Frugy, a wooded hillside overlooking the town. This wide path, which is tarmac-surfaced at the start, climbs to the left (signposted ‘pedestrians only’). At the first bend, leave the wide path on your right and continue straight ahead. The tree-lined path leads to a flight of steps on the right.

(8) Turn right, climb the few steps, then continue along the wide path. Stay on the upper part of the Frugy and ignore all the turnings to the right and left (viewpoint offering a view of the town and the whole of the northern countryside). You’ll come to a gate followed by a flight of steps leading down to Rue Haute at the traffic lights.

(9) Cross the road, turn right opposite a restaurant, then left into Place du Stivel ; note, on the right, a yellow house, the Maison Fouillen (see during the walk). Continue along the pedestrianised Rue Jean-Baptiste Bousquet, which runs alongside the Pottery Museum, then the Romanesque church of Locmaria and its cloister, situated on the left, which is well worth a thorough visit.

(10) Cross the Jardin du Prieuré de Locmaria on the right, then continue along the street.

(11) When the street turns left, take the path on the right that runs alongside the Odet and head towards the Poulguinan Bridge.

(5) Go under the bridge and head back along Chemin de Poulguinan until you reach Boulevard de Créac’h Gwen.

(4) Follow this road to the right along the pavement, then turn right and then left to walk along the lake on the opposite bank to the one you took on the way there. Walk around the Quimper Tennis Club building and arrive at the Aquarive swimming pool car park (S/E).

Notes

Along the route, you will encounter various markings: Yellow, White-Red, Light Blue. Do not pay attention to these, but follow the route description and map instead.
It is best to choose a time that coincides with high tide: the walk along the Odet is more scenic.
The time given is for walking only: everyone should adjust their pace according to the time they have available.
A map of Quimper available from the Tourist Office may be useful.
