Bombon and its surrounding countryside

A picturesque walk starting from Bombon, a small, typical Briard village. The route goes round two châteaux, follows the Ru d’Ancœur (a peaceful little stream) and crosses woods and cultivated fields.
This walk is easy, but the section along the river can be muddy in winter. Please also be aware of hunting seasons.

Description of the walk

Start in front of the entrance to Saint-Germain Church in the centre of the village of Bombon.

(S/E) Walk south along the Grand Rue and turn right into the next street (Rue de Forest). At the next bend, immediately take the Sentier de la Forge, hidden between the houses. At the end of the path, turn right into Rue de la Forge.

(1) At the end, turn left and rejoin Rue de Forest. At the next junction, turn left again onto Rue de la Fontaine. At the end of this street, turn right onto Rue du Château.

Yellow markings

Facing one of the castle entrances, turn right and follow Rue du Parc. At the end, turn left and walk along the castle walls until you reach the main entrance (information board to the left of the large gate).

(2) With your back to the castle, follow the road diagonally to the left (south-west) towards Château de Montjay. Halfway there, before the castle, you will see ruined houses overgrown with vegetation on your left (a place known as Les Trayans).

(3) At Château de Montjay, turn right and follow the path marked by thePR® sign. Turn left then right and walk past the Domaine de Bailly. Continue along the edge of the woods then enter the woods. At the crossroads (elevation 96), turn right.

Unmarked

(4) Just before the bridge over the Ru d'Ancœur (the name given here to the River Almont), take the path on the right (let thePR® continue straight ahead). Follow the river for about a kilometre (this section may be muddy in winter or in wet weather).

(5) Cross the bridge over the Ru d'Ancœur and head up a path through the woods and then along the edge of the woods. You will reach a junction with a wide path.

Yellow markings

(6) Join thePR® and follow it to the right between the fields. Ignore a path branching off to the left.

(7) Take thefirst path on the right. About 150 m further on (gate), turn left. Follow the signposted path to Rue du Charnois.

(8) Continue along Rue du Charnois. When you reach a sewage treatment plant on the right-hand side, take a path on the left that runs alongside a residential area on the edge of the village.

(9) At the next junction, turn left twice, follow Rue des Prés de l’Hôtel for a few dozen metres and turn right onto Sentier de Forest. Then turn right into Rue des Brissets, which leads to the village centre and the church (S/E).

Hike as described and in line with reviews. I can confirm that a good half of the route is on roads that are fortunately not very busy. I can also confirm that the start of the path along the stream has some tricky sections with ruts and mud despite the hot, dry weather. Otherwise, beautiful views of the countryside and the very pretty church in Bombon (unfortunately closed).

A pleasant and easy walk.
A bit too many roads for my liking, but they’re still very quiet.
For the start, I’d prefer it if we specified “with your back to the church entrance, take the Grande Rue on the left”, rather than using the cardinal points
The Sentier de la Forge is between the houses, on the left.
