Description of the walk

Park in the car park opposite the church

(S/E) With your back to the church, leave the car park and turn left to walk up Rue de l’Église for approximately 750 metres. Pass Rue de Vervins on your right; at the Y-junction, turn right onto Chemin de Marle and continue for about a hundred metres.

(1) Before No. 6 on this path, at the green signpost, turn right into a grassy lane. Pass close to the Fontaine Colette and continue until you reach a T-junction with Rue d’Ermichamp (tarmac road).

(2) Turn left and carry on for about fifty metres before reaching a second lane on the right. Turn into it and follow it due west to reach Rue de Gomont (D26, another tarmac road).

(3) Turn left and, at the next junction, leave the D31 on your right; continue straight on along the D26, Rue de Sains-Richaumont, until you reach the next junction.

(4) Leave the D26 and turn left to rejoin Rue d’Ermichamp. Turn right and walk for about 200 m until you reach the first path on the left.

(5) Take this track; it crosses the Fossé de Villebert and turns left, leading out onto a field.

(6) Please note: whilst crossing the field, the path can be difficult to follow for around 200 m; both sides of the path are farmed by the same farmer and the path may sometimes be ploughed, though it is usually restored. See the ‘Practical Information’ section below.
Continue along the path, cross the Fossé de la Sente à Boujon and reach the Chemin de Marle.

(7) Cross the Chemin de Marle and carry on straight ahead to reach the next junction with the D77.

(8) Cross the D77 and continue straight ahead along the path leading down towards the Moulin Neuf farm. When you reach the farm, turn left to join the D31.

(9) Turn left onto the narrow hard shoulder of the D31. Pass a large farm (La Laiterie) on your left; about a hundred metres further on, at the next junction, turn right to join the Axe Vert (a former railway line converted into a cycle route).

(10) Turn left onto it and continue along this route until you reach a Stop sign just before Rue d’Englancourt.

(11) Turn right and follow Rue d’Englancourt (D774), leaving Marly-Gomont behind and continuing to the next track on the left just before the bridge over the Oise.

(12) It heads due west, then, in its final stretch, runs alongside the campsite before joining Rue de Chigny (D26).

(13) Turn left, walk past La Halle (a local pub), continue for about 150 metres and, after crossing a culvert, turn left (sign: ‘no entry except for residents’). Continue for about a hundred metres along this road until you reach Rue de la Poterie (D31).

(14) Turn left and, without leaving the pavement, head back towards the centre of the village and the junction just after the town hall. Turn left onto Rue de l’Église and you’ll reach the car park (S/E)

Notes

(6) To avoid the numerous U-turns observed at this spot, here is the response from the managing authority (Thiérache Sambre & Oise Community of Communes), which was consulted for this purpose:

''Hello,
I have received your email.
Yes, indeed, at this point the footpath crosses a field. An agreement is in place whereby the landowner cultivates their field whilst leaving the path clear to the woods opposite. To continue along the path, simply follow the tracks left in the field, straight ahead, which show the correct route to take. You will rejoin the footpath 200 metres further on, in the woods directly opposite.
Kind regards,''

Worth a visit

From autumn 2006 onwards, and for several months, the ‘Marly-Gomont’ town boundary signs (at the entrance and exit) experienced a number of problems; why?? Remember: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGPXjiwl....
And if you’d like to find out more, there’s a film to watch, released in 2016: “Welcome to Marly-Gomont”

Saint-Rémy Church in Marly-Gomont: this church, which has no bell tower, belongs to the distinctive group of Thiérache churches that were fortified in the 16th and 17th centuries. See Fondation de l’Art Français and Wikipedia .

EuroVelo 3:between (10) and (11), following the Véloroute des Pélerins, which links Trondheim (Norway) to Santiago de Compostela (Spain) over a distance of more than 5,300 km.

La Halle Estaminet: housed in the former goods hall at Marly-Gomont station, with an SNCF-themed décor.

We did the Colette fountain last Friday. Lots of nature, a bit of exercise and some adventure. Signposting was fine.

Accessible to many, very enjoyable, and can be done in less time than advertised, but it’s also good to take your time …
