Description of the walk

The journey starts from Balloch railway station, the terminus of the line.

(S/E) When you get off the train, walk along the platform to the end, then cross the main road and the bridge over the River Leven.

(1) At the end of the bridge, turn left. A sign indicates that you are entering Balloch Castle Park. Follow the tarmac path which runs alongside the River Leven and then the banks of Loch Lomond. You will pass between a shop and a children’s playground. Continue straight ahead and follow the path as it curves 180°.

(2) A sign explains that you are about to join the circular Fairy Path. So turn left and follow the gravel path as it heads into the forest. From here, the path climbs steadily but not steeply. A few dirt tracks join your route; stay firmly on the gravel path. Several small blue/purple arrows mark the path to follow – no tricks!

(3) The path is interrupted by a road leading to a private entrance on the left. Go through the wooden gates and continue straight ahead.

(4) The road splits and a sign and arrows indicate that the circular route begins. The two paths (left or right) are essentially identical: the route follows the one on the left. Whichever you choose, please note the following:

  • The gravel path briefly gives way to a track of earth and grass. Small wooden benches remind you that you’re in the right place.
  • The park occasionally carries out tree felling operations in this area. Some sections may be closed, or the path may be blocked by fallen trees. In the latter case, look out for the small detours that have been set up. Pay close attention to the signage.

When you reach the gravel path again, you’re almost at the top! The summit is marked by a bench facing a lovely view of Loch Lomond and the Isle of Inchmurrin. Take the opportunity to have a break, then complete the circular path.

(4) Retrace your steps and head back to the sign marking the start of the circular Fairy Path.

(2) Turn left. Follow the park’s footpath to reach Balloch Castle. There you’ll find free toilets and information boards about the region’s conservation programmes.

(5) Continue on your way to the exit. To your right, the park is full of little paths if you wish to extend your walk.

(6) Go through the park’s exit gate and turn right to reach the station. If you cross the road just past the bus station (where there are also toilets), you can stop at the town’s souvenir shop to do some shopping before catching the train (S/E).
