Walk beneath Le Fayé in Petitmagny and Grosmagny

A pleasant, easy walk on the southern section of the departmental road and of moderate difficulty on the mountainous section.
You’ll discover the villages of Petitmagny and Grosmagny, with their church and the Miclo monument.

You’ll admire countryside and woodland scenery with pretty ponds, a beautiful view of the Vosges, the Fayé, the Salbert and the Planche des Belles Filles, as well as the Belfort Pass.
A short detour will take you to the Notre-Dame du Grippot Chapel.
It is signposted with a Blue Ring

Description of the walk

Car park at Grosmagny Town Hall.
The walk is signposted with a Blue Ring.

(S/E) Walk past the town hall and head straight on (east) along Rue du Château. On the left, admire the Miclo monument.

(1) Turn right onto Rue des Royers. It turns into a path. Admire the beautiful view of the Belfort gap and the Planche des Belles Filles. The path passes between two ponds and offers a beautiful view of the Vosges. Follow the markings carefully.

(2) Turn left onto the road (D58) and, 50 metres further on, turn left onto the path that climbs. Walk past several ponds on your right.
Pass by the André Stantina memorial; he was a schoolteacher found dead by accident at this spot.
When you reach the first houses in Petitmagny, turn left.

(3) Cross the D12 at the pedestrian crossing and continue straight ahead into the Grande Rue.

(4) At the school, take the sharp right-hand bend into Rue de la Brosse. Walk past the town hall and the community hall. Continue along the street, which turns into a path, until you reach the junction of Rue de la Brosse and Rue Principale, where there is a picnic table.

(5) Do not take Rue des Breuleux but continue along the second road on the right, which turns into an uphill path.
Enter the forest. The path climbs. Keep a close eye on the signposting. Pass two paths on the left, then one on the right.

(6) Continue straight on at the junction with other signposted paths and the GRE5. Pass one path on the right, then one on the left.

(7) Take a sharp left onto the wide forest road. Follow it for about 800m.

(8) Turn onto the first path on the left and head downhill. Follow the signposts, continue straight on at the next two junctions and arrive at the water reservoir.

(9) Take a moment to read the information board.
A 10-minute round trip is possible to visit the Notre-Dame du Grippot Chapel by following the signposts.
Alternatively, head down Rue du Grippot. Pass the numerous dead-end streets on both sides, which serve local residents.

(10) At the roundabout, continue straight on along Rue de la Libération, then turn right towards the town hall to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Monument to Abbé Miclo

Late 19th century – Granite and bronze
The fighting on 2 November 1870 resulted in 27 dead and 17 wounded among the Haute-Saône militia in Giromagny. Forced to march at the head of the enemy column alongside the parish priest Lacreuse, Abbé Miclo, curate at Étueffont, was killed by a German officer whilst tending to the wounded at the scene of the battle. The bas-reliefs depicting the scene provide a record of the uniforms worn by soldiers and clergy at that time.

Le Fayé

Le Fayé is a peak in the Vosges mountains, rising to an altitude of 916 metres.

Petitmagny

Place names: Gnalmaigni and Gnamaigni (1427), Bittmeni (1579), Petit-Maingni (1627), Petit Magny (1793), Magny-Petit (1801). Its inhabitants are known as the Borboillots.
The village’s name is first mentioned in 1417, but in the preceding century the fiefdom passed from the seigneury of Rougemont to that of Rosemont.
The village was built on the sunny slope of the Vosges mountains on a road that was originally a Roman road linking Langres to Strasbourg, bypassing the mountains to the south

Grosmagny

Toponymy: Grumenin (1350), Grumaigni and Grumenegeny (1427), Grumaigny (1655), Magny-Gros (1801).
In German: Gross-Menglatt. Its inhabitants are known as Grosmagniens.
The village of Grosmagny is crossed by the Roman road running through the southern Vosges. The first known mention of Aggrum Masnil dates from the mid-12th century. Upon the division of Jeanne de Montbéliard’s estate, the fief of Grosmagny passed to her daughter, Jeannette de Ferrette, who had married Archduke Albert of Austria. The village belonged to the parish of Rougegoutte until around 1796, when the Church of Saint-Georges was built.

I shortened this route to 7km instead of 10.69km because of the heat.
At point 4, I continued along the main street and took the path up the hill to reach Rue du Gripport between points 9 and 10

A lovely walk, mainly through the forest.
Because of the mist, no great views to be had.
No one on the paths. Pure bliss!
