Description of the walk

Start from the village of Montagne, car park in front of the church.

(S/E) From Montagne, head down the Chemin de la Bigalière. At the right-hand bend, just after the farm, continue straight ahead along the grassy path. Cross the stony path that joins the Bigalière and continue towards the stream. Enter a small wood and reach the Rivière Joyeuse.

(1) Turn left and follow the river for about 1.5 km. You will reach a road (there are rubbish bins on either side).

(2) Follow it to the right, cross the four-way junction in the hamlet of Tôt, then at the shed on the left, turn left behind it. About fifty metres further on, turn right onto a stony path, Chemin de Grat. The start is a bit stony, but manageable if you take it slowly; this is followed by a lovely path of sand and grass. You’ll come to a small country road.

(3) Turn left; you’ll feel as though you’re crossing a house’s courtyard, and after this cluster of houses, head straight down to the right (a bit stony here too!), following the path all the way down. At the walnut tree field, take the path in the centre. 300m further on, this path branches off to the left; follow it, then head back up, turning left as you skirt several fields, and reach the corner of the cemetery (you can’t go wrong – there’s only one possible exit!!!).

(4) Turn left and arrive at the hamlet of Moucherand. Cross the hamlet and continue along a grassy path. At the end, turn right, cross a ford and, 20m further on, join the road from Parnans to Montmiral (D323).

(5) Head left and make your way to the Chevrette de Blandine farm.
Cross the courtyard (you can buy fresh goat’s cheese here!), but be careful – there are two friendly dogs! They do bark a lot, though.
Walk past the cheese dairy on your right, then head gently uphill to the stone path and follow it to the left.

(6) At the crossroads, turn right towards Le Sabot and cross the bridge. This is followed by a lovely sandy path where horses can run to their hearts’ content (be careful: the first farm on your right has dogs, though they’re usually tied up!) and follow this path all the way to the top.

(7) Turn right, cross the hamlet of Le Sabot, pass all the houses, and when you reach two rubbish bins, turn left onto a grassy path.

(8) Pass between two walnut orchards, then take the path on the right. Cross the walnut orchard and rejoin the path that climbs steeply up to the small road before the village of Montagne. Turn left and head towards the village (S/E).

A lovely, easy ride despite our skittish horses!

Hello, thank you for your feedback – it’s true, it’s not easy to explain a route
And it really is a lovely walk, especially in good weather; what’s more, you can buy some lovely goat’s cheese at Blandine’s

Hello, it’s a lovely walk, though the directions aren’t always clear (though that’s tricky to explain and can be interpreted differently depending on the person). The map is fairly reliable, so make sure you check it carefully when the GPS stops working...

It was a pleasant walk, although at point no. 3 the path to the right after the farm is private
so that led us astray and threw us off course; we were
a bit disoriented!!

Yes, I agree with you: the chicken coop is on the right and the pony paddock is on the left, as I mentioned in my comment – no problem. However, these landmarks are located after point 4, not before it, as you state in your description.

Hello,
Thanks for your comments, I’ve made a few changes… it’s not easy to write a good description! I know it so well that for me it makes perfect sense but it’s true that for people who don’t know the area, it’s more complicated. And yes, I mixed up left and right for the ford!! Oops! A thousand apologies!

However, regarding your first comment, the pony paddock was definitely on the left, unless there’s been a recent change! On the right there’s a chicken coop, and now, just before the chicken coop on the right, there’s a sort of sewage treatment plant or something like that!

A lovely walk that we also did on foot (about 4 hours). However, a few changes or clarifications would be welcome: here are a few suggestions:
- Point 4 is when you reach the cement works; then you head back down to pass the chicken coop on the right and the pony field on the left.
- Just after the flat stone ford (marked by the Yellow Cross), you must turn sharp left to rejoin the road, not right, where there is no path.
- Finally, after point 7, there are two paths crossing the walnut grove; take the path on the right, cross the walnut grove and rejoin the path that climbs steeply up to the small road before the village of Montagne.

Hello,
We did this hike on foot rather than on horseback; it takes about four hours, including breaks.
The guide was quite good, apart from one point where we didn’t know where to go and the GPS stopped working, but it was no big deal – we found our way back fairly quickly. Personally, I found it very enjoyable but physically challenging, with some steep climbs, especially the last one which really finishes you off lol

Hello,
We went on this horse ride at the end of November, on the only sunny day of that weekend.
It was really lovely... despite the high humidity, which made the ground very slippery in places, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. It took us four hours, including a snack break at Montmiral Cemetery with a lovely view of the Vercors.
A rather brief description, but could I have done any better?
By studying the map carefully, and with a bit of a sense of direction, we managed very well despite a couple of hesitations.
Thanks to the author for this lovely walk.
