Baie de la Fresnaye towards Saint-Cast

This route will introduce you to Fresnaye Bay with its changing light, oyster beds and Fort la Latte. It is worth doing at low tide and high tide, as the view of the bay, the colours and the atmosphere will be so different. By combining part of this walk with the "Baie de la Fresnaye and Moulin de la Mer" walk already described on this site, it is very easy to plan a day trip.

Description of the walk

Start from the car park in front of the chapel in the hamlet of Saint-Germain de la Mer.

(S/E) Facing the chapel, turn right and then take the first street on the left. Continue along this street, which crosses Tertre Bigot, and turn right onto the path.

(1) After about 300 metres along a beautiful sunken lane, join theGR® 34, which you should take on the left. It crosses a small bridge over the stream at the Moulin de la Mer. Follow theGR® 34 (this path follows the coastline, hence its name, Chemin des Douaniers, or Customs Officers' Path).

(2) Ignore the paths on the left that would take you back across the stream. The path climbs up, overlooking the coast, and arrives at Port Saint-Jean. Cross the tarmac section and rejoin theGR® a little further up. Shortly afterwards, take the path on the left. You will cross a stream via a small wooden bridge. After about 30 metres, you will have a choice of two paths.

(3) TheGR® 34 is the one on the left. It will take you along Plage de la Fosse beach and across the tarmac road that leads to it. It resumes a little further down. When you reach a fork, take the path on the left, which will take you to Pointe du Grouin de la Fosse, where you will have a beautiful view of Baie de la Fresnaye.

(4) Continuing on, it overlooks the seafront, runs alongside a campsite on the right and then follows a tarmac road for a very short distance. Continue, leaving the first path on your left, and after about 300 m, take the path on your right. This will take you to Fresnaye Beach, where you will cross the road that leads to it.

(5) Continue on theGR® (it will once again pass a campsite) and at the end of the beach, at a fork, it continues to the left to Pointe du Châtelet. Follow it to Plage de la Pissotte. Do not go down to the beach via the path on the left; stay on theGR® 34. At the first fork, continue straight ahead, leaving theGR® 34.

(6) You will come to a tarmac road, Rue de la Pissotte. Take this road and walk past the last campsite on your right until you reach Rue des Nouettes, which you should follow to the right. At the first fork, continue along this road, turning left. Then leave Rue du Moulin Bily on your left.

(7) At a place called La Fresnaye, you will come to Rue de la Fresnaye. Cross this street and continue straight ahead along Rue de la Ville Norme. Take the second street on the left, Rue des Tourelles. Continue along Rue des Tourelles, which leads to Rue de la Baillie, which you should take on the right. Pass the first street on the left before Hameau de la Baillie and continue along the street, which ends in two unpaved paths.

(8) Take the left-hand path, which will take you to theGR® 34

(3) Follow theGR® 34 in the opposite direction to the route you have already taken on this section.

(2) Take the path on the right, which has a crossing point over the stream. This path leads to another path, which you should take on the right and which follows the edge of the rocks and the cliff.

(9) Just before the beautiful building on the left, which is an old tide mill, you will come to a staircase (not very visible) which you must take to reach a tarmac road. (If this path is no longer accessible due to high tide, take the path used on the way there, continuing straight on at point 2. Continue along this tarmac road.
At the first junction, continue on the road to the left, which will take you back to Tertre Bigot and then to our starting point in Saint-Germain de la Mer (S/E).

Worth a visit

There are the same things to see as on the "Baie de la Fresnaye and Moulin de la Mer" hike.

This hike (at low tide) highlights the stunning view of the rows of oyster beds and the people who work in this bay: oyster farmers and their strange machines, shore fishermen with Fort de la Latte in the background.

Quite quickly, you can continue along the coast instead of taking a detour (new path created).
The town is of moderate interest, but it would be a good idea to modify the route to include the small church.

Hello,
We did this hike in beautiful late September sunshine in 2½ hours.
It really is a lovely walk.
We really like the Moulin de la Mer site and the entire coastline of the 22nd arrondissement.

One of the most beautiful hikes I have ever done on the north coast of Brittany. Varied, with magnificent woodland passages and beautiful views of Fresnaye Bay...

Important: walk in the direction indicated to enjoy the view of Fresnaye Bay and Fort La Latte.
The return journey is easier via the countryside.
