Description of the walk

The starting point is in the car park of Landreau Park and Les Herbiers football club’s stadium.

(S/E) For the first few kilometres of the route, heading north-east, take the Circuit des Crêtes (departmental route) via a quiet, gently ascending road;

(1) At the first junction, turn right towards La Frolière, passing this hamlet and the turn-off for La Brochetère.

(2) Turn right towards La Choletière. Pass a magnificent lodge and a farm and follow a stony path to a crossroads.

(3) At the junction, turn right and walk along a well-sheltered, descending path (the ‘Roman path’, according to a local resident) heading south-west until you reach a small road.

(4) Follow this road to the left until you reach the outskirts of Les Herbiers. When you reach a small roundabout, cross the road at a pedestrian crossing and follow a small path through a housing estate to a pedestrian crossing that will take you into the Parc du Landreau.

(5) Enter the park and turn left until you reach a footbridge crossing the Grande Maine river. Head up towards the park, which features magnificent century-old trees (18th century).

(6) In the park, you’ll find a huge playground, two fitness and sports trails, several walking paths, picnic tables and a grotto modelled on the one in Lourdes (Massabielle Grotto).
Signs indicate the various walking routes in the park.
Return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Toilets in Landreau Park.

Worth a visit

Near the car park, in the park, there are plenty of picnic tables (in the shade or in the sun).
In the park (30 ha), you can see beautiful century-old trees, short routes, and Landreau Castle (first built in the 16th century, destroyed during the Wars of the Vendée in 1794 and rebuilt in the late19th century), which is now a care home. A grotto modelled on the one in Lourdes has been created.

The Grande Maine river, which rises in the middle of the route and is crossed by a footbridge (it is joined by the Petite Maine and flows into the Sèvre Nantaise).
The Puy du Fou park, a few kilometres from Les Herbiers.
This walk can be combined (as a day trip) with the Mont des Alouettes route, including a picnic in Landreau Park.

Please note that the starting point is not easy to find. The GPX track is very approximate and does not correspond to the actual routes on the map. You need to start from the north-eastern corner of the car park. I was parked right next to it, but I preferred to look elsewhere and go into the woods because it didn't match the track. It's a shame, because that was the starting point.
Similarly, I made a mistake at the point (1) where you should not hesitate to leave the markings you have been following until then and ignore the cross marks.
Don't expect to see Landreau Castle, which is now a retirement home that you can't get close to.
The rest of the hike is quite good, with lots of panoramic views of the region. There are a few roads, but no cars.
Note that there is a viewpoint mentioned on the IGN map in the park just before the point (6) with an analemmatic sundial that will entertain young and old alike. There are also a few wooden deckchairs for contemplating the view.
An alternative route is to take the Sentier des Crêtes (Ridge Trail) indicated on the OSM Rando map by turning left instead of going straight between point (5) and point (6), but you will not pass by the viewpoint.

Out of an 8-kilometre walk, only 3 kilometres are on footpaths; the rest is on tarmac. Not much to see. A shame

A lovely walk, especially the second half from La Choletière: beautiful country lanes, lovely views, rich flora, and cows and sheep in the meadows. The first half is a bit too much tarmac for my liking, even though the road is pretty and very quiet.

I completely agree with you about the beauty of the scenery, particularly the stunning Landreau Park. I combined this route with the Mont des Alouettes trail, stopping for a picnic in Landreau Park, but that was back in June. I was advised by the chairman of the Herbretais walkers’ group; the two routes can be linked together; the Grande Maine Springs route can be extended via the Crêtes route.

A quiet country lane to start with, followed by lovely paths and beautiful scenery (with plenty of stunning views). There are also lovely herds of cows, which add to the beauty of the countryside.
