Description of the walk

When arriving in Biscarrués from Ayerbe, at the village bar, La Barbacana, turn right and then immediately left to park in Plaza Constitutión.

(S/E) Leave the square via the street you just took and turn left onto Calle Major. This street goes around the church. Follow Calle del Aire to the left, then Camino de las Eras. Pass the swimming pool and you will see the cemetery.

(1) Turn left, walk along the left side of the cemetery and follow the well-marked blue and white trail marked Ruta de las Tumbas Romanas. At one point, the trail leads to a large rock. Look to the right and you will see a marker and a cairn indicating the direction to follow. The trail crosses the ruins of a sheepfold and leads to a track, which you should take to the right.

(2) Before following this track, find the Tumbas Romanas in the thick vegetation opposite the ruins. Take the track that goes up the Barranco de Valderrasal, between the almond groves and pine trees. Ignore the tracks branching off to the left and continue in the direction of the Barranco. The track turns north, climbing alongside a field of almond trees; at the top of the field, it heads east again.

(3) At the end of an almond grove, the track crosses the Barranco and turns left. Take the uphill path opposite you with large flat rocks. After 150 m, rejoin the track. Follow it south, ignoring a track on the left, then a track on the right. You will arrive at a small pass and see the village of Piedramorrera. Descend towards the village, ignoring the paths branching off to the left.

(4) Enter the village of Piedramorrera via the aptly named Calle Unica! In the village square, there is an information panel explaining local beliefs and the doorfronts of the oldest houses in the village.
Descend to the Ayerbe - Biscarrués road and cross it. Pass an old well and cross the Barranco de Vadello.

(5) Immediately afterwards, leave the track and take an old cattle track that climbs steeply at first and cuts across the track. After 100 m, cross the track again and continue along this track for 300 m to rejoin the track, which climbs steeply.

(6) When you reach the highest point of this circular route, at a track junction, take the track on the right and descend gently towards Biscarrués, skirting a huge wheat field on the right and the Barranco de Cucarbala on the left, below.

(7) The track makes a wide right turn through the almond groves and the descent becomes steeper as you approach Biscarrués. Leave the main track and take a small track on the right, descend towards an old farm building, take the path that passes in front of it and continue downhill towards the village. Rejoin the track just before crossing the Barranco de Vadello. Cross the road and head for Plaza Constitución (S/E).

Notes

For your information, opposite the bar, there are information boards about Biscarrués and the hikes offered by Sendéros de Biscarrués de l'Ayuntamiento de Biscarrués.

There are no drinking water points on the route. Take enough water with you.
This is an easy route that does not require special hiking equipment such as high-top boots, etc.
Refreshments are available in the village.
An added bonus would be to do this circular route in February-March when the almond trees are in bloom.
The Sendéros de Biscarrués website is very well designed and offers other hiking options.

Worth a visit

The villagers recommended we take the botanical trail, but unfortunately we didn't have time.
In the village of Piedramorrera, the pediments above the doors are decorated with crosses and rosettes. These are supposed to ward off witches and evil spirits.
We also saw thistle flowers placed near the doors. Witches, coming at night, were obsessed with these flowers and counted their countless seeds, which kept them busy all night and thus prevented them from bothering the inhabitants!
Nearby, visit Loarre Castle and the village of Riglos, a mecca for rock climbing.

A pleasant hike starting in the cool of the morning but with ideal weather thereafter.
The final stretch can be completed without cutting across fields by staying on the path.
