Around the village of Le Vézier

A lovely little walk around the village of Le Vézier in the Marne. There are lovely views of the village nestled in the valley, as you’ll be walking at a higher elevation for much of the route. Well worth a visit – a pleasant walk.

Description of the walk

The route starts at the town hall in Le Vézier.

(S/E) Facing the town hall, take the Vieille Rue on the right-hand side. Cross the RD547 (Rue de Montmirail) and follow the signs for “Les Caillots” opposite. Cross the bridge over the Vézier stream, then pass the wash house just after and continue along the tarmac road. Pass through the hamlet of “Les Caillots”, where the road turns into a dirt track. Continue along this track.

(1) Ignore the path branching off to the right (which will be the return route) and continue straight ahead. At the fork in the two paths, turn left and cross a small bridge over the stream. Cross the RD547 again and take the path opposite, which climbs slightly. Ignore the path on the right and continue straight ahead.

(2) You will reach the RD247; take it to the left towards the village of Le Vézier for about 450m.

(3) Turn onto a dirt track on the right. Cross a small stream and continue straight on along the track.

(4) Turn left onto a grassy path; 200m further on, ignore a path branching off to the right. Cross the D47 and continue straight ahead on the grassy path. Ignore a path branching off to the right.

(5) Turn left onto the grassy track and cross the stream and the Roman bridge, then the tarmac road. Continue straight ahead on the dirt track which climbs slightly. Follow it to the end.

(6) At the end, take the path on the left, cross the main road and continue straight ahead on the path. Ignore the first path branching off to the right

(7) At the junction, turn left and follow the grassy path to the end.

(1) Turn left onto the path that passes through the hamlet of "Caillots", cross through the hamlet again and return along the tarmac road to the town hall (S/E).

Notes

There are no signposts, so it is advisable to bring a map and route description.
There are no water points along the route, so bring something to drink.
You will be in the open countryside and shelter is scarce, although there are some private barns along the route.
Most of the paths are in good condition, but some farm tracks may be very muddy at times, especially in wet weather. It is therefore advisable to wear walking boots.

Worth a visit

The church at Le Vézier is closed, but if you ask at the town hall, they may be able to tell you who can open it for you.

A pleasant walk; you really do go all the way round the Vézier, which you never lose sight of.
A countryside walk with short stretches through woodland. We’ll be back as we don’t live far away.

A pleasant stroll, though not particularly interesting apart from getting some fresh air. There are more charming places to go for a walk in Champagne.

A short walk that can be completed in just over two hours. Well-balanced, not at all tiring, very little tarmac, and some charming scenery (though in this rather remote part of the Marne, there are more evocative spots to be found). Our second time on this route: no regrets, but we’re not sure we’d want to do it a third time...
