Around the Ruisseau de Lagarel from Saint-Guiraud

This hike will take you to viewpoints overlooking the Lergue and Hérault valleys, passing through the rapids of the Lagarel stream and past the site of an old lime kiln. Bring a torch for the tunnel and a map as the route is not signposted. The GPX track will also be very useful.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park opposite the town hall in Saint-Guiraud.

(S/E) Opposite the town hall, turn left, cross the junction and follow the road opposite for about twenty metres. Then turn left into Rue du Château d’Eau, which further on becomes a track. Negotiate the hairpin bend to the left and continue for about 150 m to reach a fork.

(1) Take the track to the left of the path and go through the tunnel.

(2) As you emerge from the tunnel, follow the track leading down to the right, heeding the instructions given by the landowner. Go round the site of the old lime kiln and follow the winding path until it joins the D144.

(3) Turn right and walk carefully alongside the road, cross the bridge over the Ruisseau de Lagarel and continue until you reach the path on the left leading to the Mas de Canet.

(4) Leave the road and take the path on the right which heads towards the stream and overlooks it.

(5) Make a detour to the right to get closer to the stream, then veer off to the left and head for a small dirt parking area.

(6) From this point, you are in a rocky landscape with no signposting and few landmarks: follow the GPX track. Head right, cross the bed of the Ruisseau de Lagarel and keep going in the same direction to reach the start of a faint track.

(7) Follow this track, which quickly veers to the right and heads south then east as it climbs: as you proceed, the track becomes increasingly clear. You’ll reach a forest track with views over the Lergue and Hérault valleys.

(8) Head right downhill towards Saint-Guiraud.

(9) Turn left onto a downhill path lined with pidgeon hunting huts. The end of the path becomes quite stony before leading onto a tarmac road.

(10) Turn right onto this small road, which continues as a track. Pass Pradines on your right and continue straight on to reach Saint-Géraud Church and the small cemetery.

(11) Turn left onto Rue de l'Église, continue along Grande Rue to reach the crossroads and the town hall car park (S/E).

Notes

Torchlight is essential for crossing the tunnel between (1) and (2).

(3) An alternative route along the bed of the Lagarel Stream is possible depending on the water level. This route is more scenic. Resume the route described between waypoints (6) and (7).

Worth a visit

Old lime kiln after (2).

The tunnel is easy to find, but vegetation is encroaching. The only drawback is the length of the road, which is
dangerous and not much fun. Avoid doing it after heavy rain. There are three fords to cross before you get back on the track. It's fun, but it was touch and go keeping our feet dry!
So yes, there are no markings, but with the IGN map and Koomot, it's a piece of cake.

Hello
The route is interesting but "ruined" by a generally inappropriate description from the outset. Yes, you have to take Rue du Chateau d'Eau, which is further on, opposite a track. In fact, at the end of this street, there is a kind of round concrete basin about 2 metres high, which must be the small water tower. From there, you need to take the path on the right-hand side of the basin (almost a continuation of Rue du Château) and then, at the end, turn left and go up the hill after a barrier. From this barrier, it's about 80 metres to the first path on the left. Go straight ahead at the end (30 metres) and, behind the foliage, you'll come to the famous tunnel.
We missed this path leading to the tunnel and went straight on to a large ridge, then turned back at some point because we were getting further away from St Guiraud...! With no signs or markings, we ended up on the D144 and reached point 2, the tunnel, then point 1 (returning in the opposite direction...).
We ended up walking about 4 km further, but the region is beautiful and the hike is not difficult.
We will do it again later, in the right direction this time. We hope that all the directions on the app will be clear because the markings and landmarks we expected to find on the ground were non-existent.

The description of the route to find the tunnel is insufficient, but this helps to protect the site.

We missed the tunnel and had to make two return trips.
On the other hand, we did get to enjoy some lovely views across the plateau towards the Pyrenees.
The section through the scree is very tricky and requires considerable perseverance.
Lack of signposting or cairns.
The route itself is pleasant, apart from the kilometre on the road!

I only followed the directions partially so that I could extend the route. At the start, the description lacks precision; it would be helpful to specify, after Rue du Château d’Eau, that at the Château d’Eau you should turn right onto the hairpin bend track that climbs up opposite. After 150 metres, indicate that the track to take on the left descends and is stony. Once you can see the lime kiln, carry straight on, ignoring the path that branches off to the left and descends very steeply towards the kiln (unless you want to visit it, which we did and it’s well worth it). From point 4, we turned left towards Le Causal; you need to reach the high-voltage power line and follow it, then turn right to join the track leading to the Isserts dolmen, where there is also a superb drystone shelter. After that, we headed back towards the Canyon du Diable, which we explored without following the official trail markers (in particular, we walked upstream along the Agaras, which ends in a superb waterfall); we then rejoined the marked route from point 7, and the rest of the route is clear and well-marked.
