Around Lac du Vallon

A hike that begins peacefully by the lake and then alternates between paths, tracks, ridges, plateaus, forest and waterfalls.
Beautiful landscapes on the southern part of the route, possible encounters with chamois, we really enjoyed ourselves on this day's walk.

Description of the walk

Park in the large car park at the edge of Lac du Vallon.

(S/E) Walk along the left bank of the lake. Cross the Ruisseau de la Diomaz to reach the Chapelle Saint-Bruno.

(1) Take the path on the right that runs alongside this stream, pass the Croix des Chartreux and arrive at the stream ford.

(2) Cross and join the logging track leading to Les Gouilles.

(3) Follow this for a few metres before taking a path that branches off to the left. You will come to another wide logging track.

(4) Climb gently, turn left at the first crossroads to arrive above La Bray and its mountain pasture. Continue to La Léchère.

(5) Take a wide, less well-maintained path on the left towards Les Bétets and you will arrive at its chalets.

(6) Climb towards the Col des Bétets. Take a short break at the pass to admire the mountain pasture below.

(7) Continue along the path towards Tête des Follys, staying as close to the ridge as possible. Turn left at the crossroads; the path is more or less well maintained, blocked by fallen trees or other obstacles but passable. You will arrive at Tête des Follys.

(8) We turn left and follow the ridge, sometimes through the woods, sometimes in the open with superb views of the mountain pastures and the lake, heading towards Tête au Moine, which we then reach.

(9) Turn right downhill onto a path that may be slippery depending on the weather conditions of the previous days. It is sometimes marked with yellow paint on the trees, but following it is not too difficult. You will arrive at the crossroads of a wide road.

(10) Turn right, then left at the next bend, following a more pedestrian track. Walk along the right bank of the Ruisseau de Bellecombe stream.

::11: Cross the Brevon and you will arrive at La Chèvrerie.

(12) Walk along the right bank of the lake to return to the Lac du Vallon car park (S/E).

A very physically demanding hike, especially on the way therethe time for this hike is poorly calculated, because the overview indicates 6 hours, whereas it can be done in less time. Personally, it took us 4 hours with a lunch break and short photo breaks. At the summit, there is a beautiful view of Mont Blanc. Be careful on the descent, especially in autumn between points 9 and 10, as the path can be hidden by dead leaves.

The path along the river is very pleasant
above the Chartreux cross (at point 2, it is difficult to find the logging track).
There is a pretty little hamlet with chalets (Les Bêtets). From Tête des Follys, the ridge path offers magnificent views on both sides.
Second problem at point 9 finding the path with the yellow marker (we cut across fields following the GPS to find this path).

Great hike, it took me 7 hours because there was a lot of snow and I forgot my snowshoes 😅. Very nice route, unfortunately very poorly marked. I met two other hikers who also had a hard time. Fortunately, the app helped me find my way (especially when I found myself in the clouds with poor visibility). I'll be back this summer 🥰

A very beautiful, varied hike. The only downside is finding the descent trail at Tête au Moine. With few visitors, the trail is invisible and the yellow paint markings are missing at this point, but we find them further down. What's more, there is no GPS network to locate yourself!

A lovely, peaceful and relatively short hike (3½ hours at a leisurely pace). Avoid in autumn as the return trail is steep and very muddy. The view from the summit is beautiful and well worth the effort. In my opinion, this hike does not deserve to be classified as difficult, nor does it warrant the walking time given. One last piece of information: Lake Vallon is not located at high altitude, but at the side of the road (car park).

Hello, I take note of your comment regarding the duration, especially since it is not the first time.
I should have specified that we really take our time when we go hiking.
From the outset, at the lakeside, we spent some time admiring the scenery, as we did at the chapel at the end of the lake, etc.
So it's true that I should have included the total walking time, which is about 3 to 3.5 hours without breaks or anything else.

Thank you all for these clarifications, and happy hiking!

Well-shaded route, providing protection from the sun. Fairly varied forests, but rather limited views. The estimated time of 6 hours 20 minutes is excessive (unless it includes a good lunch break). For our part (my wife and I are approaching 70), it took us 3 hours 35 minutes. The difficult rating can only be explained by the last descent, which is long, quite steep and slippery in the woods. A good pair of shoes is necessary.

For a hike called "around Vallon Lake", I expected to climb high and enjoy views of the lake, but no, 95% of it was forest, which was pleasant and pretty, but there were no views. On the other hand, when there are views, they are delightful. As I hike alone, I have a GPS, which fortunately helped me out in a few "cloudy" spots. However, it took me 4½ hours to walk at a leisurely pace, including snack breaks, photo stops, etc., so 6 hours 20 minutes seems very excessive to me. It's a nice hike to do in the summer when it's hot because it's well shaded.

Several interesting points of interest, including the lake, the small chapel, the waterfalls with their potholes, and the view of Roc d'Enfer and Pointe de Chalune. I lost my way on the descent after Tête au Moine, which led me to Plan des Rasses.
One small downside is that there are many sections on roads.
Thanks to the author for this hike.
