Around Penhors

A short circular walk combining a seaside route with views of Audierne Bay, a section near a small coastal pond, and the chance to discover a somewhat forgotten dolmen as well as the famous Chapel of Notre-Dame de Penhors.

Description of the walk

Start from the Palud Gourinet car park in Penhors, Pouldreuzic.

(S/E) With your back to the car park, take the coastal path heading south-east.
Be sure to stay on the marked path, which runs slightly back from the cliff edge, as the cliff is very unstable (sign: ‘Falaise Active’).
Look out for an old seaweed kiln on the left. Carry on until you reach the small sheltered harbour at Penhors.

(1) Carry on in the same direction along the embankment running alongside the sea, pass the water sports centre building and continue between the road and the pebbles, which have been pushed back to protect the road from the sea’s onslaught in winter.

(2) At a bar on your left, take the marked path and continue to the first small pond.

(3) A discreetGR® marker on a post, almost flush with the ground, signals that you should leave the path and head onto the pebble ridge. You can also walk along the top of the beach, at the edge of the pebbles. Continue to the second pond. If you are on the beach, you can spot it by a trickle of water. Then head back up onto the pebble ridge.

(4) At the pond on your right, follow a grassy path which leads to a small road at a barrier. Turn left, pass the hamlet of Penker and arrive at a dolmen situated on the right, set back slightly from the road. There is no sign marking it.

(5) Continue along the small road, ignoring the one coming from the right, and reach the first pond you came across on the way out.
Take the marked path on the left and retrace your steps along the route you took on the way there.
Ignore the road branching off to the right and, just before the entrance to a car park, turn right towards the chapel.
Ignore the road leading to a campsite and turn left to reach the 16th-century wayside shrine.

(6) Enter the enclosure through the triumphal gate and take a moment to admire this beautiful building. Of course, if it’s open, you’ll love a visit inside. Exit on the west side and, almost directly opposite, take the Chemin des Mendiants, flanked by two lovely embankments. Walk past a beautiful farmhouse currently being renovated (2017) and then round the back of the hotel-restaurant. Cross the road and rejoin the coastal path.

(1) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction. The sweeping view stretches towards Audierne and the western tip of Finistère. Return to the car park where you started (S/E).

A very easy coastal route, perfect for a family outing. It offers lovely views of the sea and Audierne Bay, though these are nothing compared to the scenery at Cap Sizun (Pointe du Van, Baie des Trépassés, etc.) or at Pointe de la Torche.

A very pleasant route, almost always along the coast. The Penhors Chapel, which we visited, is very interesting. It’s best to do this route at low tide to make the most of the sandy stretches where it’s easy to walk. It’s harder going on the pebbles at the top of the breakwaters
A slight disappointment: the dolmen is really tiny!

A short, introductory walk to kick off the first day of the holidays. An easy stroll along the footpath, returning along the beach at low tide to admire the vast stretches of white sand. Penhors Chapel, seen from both the outside and the inside, is a beautiful symbol of Brittany.

In my opinion, the wording should be amended as follows:
- Starting point / End point: I think it would be easier to locate this at the car park in front of the hotel-restaurant; the car park is actually intended for this purpose. The suggested car park, although it does exist, is more out in the countryside and the cars ‘spoil’ the landscape, in my view. Besides, when I arrived, I found the ‘main’ car park very easily. It was only afterwards that I realised it wasn’t the one suggested by the route. Follow the road as it continues towards a campsite
(5): Replace << Follow the road that branches off to the right and, just before the entrance to a car park, turn right towards the chapel >> with << Do not take the road that branches off to the right under any circumstances. Continue towards the car parks and find a path that winds to the right between the two car parks >>
(5): Replace << Let the road continue towards a campsite >> with << At the corner of a house, slightly to the right of the path, turn left >>; I didn’t see any campsite at this point.
(6): Replace << and take the Chemin des Mendiants, almost opposite >> with << and take the Chemin des Mendiants, slightly to the left, almost opposite >>
