Around Mialet in the Cévennes

A superb hike with beautiful views. A very difficult start on a large scree slope, then a gentle climb. Yellow markings a few times, then meeting the Stevenson Trail, then no more markings, then again, and a difficult finish for ankles and knees.

Description of the walk

Park in the small car park

(S/E) Take the steps just behind it leading up towards the village and follow Rue des Oliviers to the right until you reach a Fork in the road.

(1) Take the street that climbs to the left and follow it straight on, then tackle a very steep climb for quite a while.

(2) Turn right and continue for a very long time until you reach a cross path.

(3) Turn right and continue straight on, passing Mas Pagès, then follow the track until you reach a Fork in the road.

(4) At the Fork in the road, head slightly left, still climbing, and join the Chemin de Stevenson.

(5) Take thefirst path on the right, pass the antennas and continue straight on, ignoring the side paths.

(6) Please note: leave theGRP®® andPR®® to take a small path on the right at the plateau (signpostedPR®® closed) and follow it to a junction with a round cairn.

(7) Join theGRP®® andPR®® again by continuing to the right and follow this wide path which leads to a road.

(8) Before reaching the road, take the hairpin bend onto the small path on the right.

(9) Take the path on the left at the hairpin bend and continue down through a steep scree slope. Follow it to the footbridge.

(10) After the footbridge, turn left onto the road and follow it to a small path.

(11) Turn right, head straight on towards the village and pass in front of the cemetery. Walk through the village and take the opportunity to admire the old houses and the small cobbled street, then return to the crossroads from the outward journey.

(1) Follow the route back to the car park (start/finish).

Notes

We are keen walkers and completed it in 3½ hours (plus a lunch break in the clearing at point (8), in the sunshine – which really warms you up in winter!).

Mialet and the Camisards’ central hub. Numerous hikes start from here; you can do them without ever passing the same spot twice.

Worth a visit

The Musée du Désert (dedicated to Protestantism) and the Trabuc caves, all in Les Luziers.

Circular route leading to a ridge overlooking the Mialet valley and offering views as far as the sea. Well-marked route. Visorando's description would have benefited from more landmarks (e.g. from Mialet) and place names identified on the ground or marked on the map. The approach and passage along the Mas Pagès, perched high above, were a highlight of the route. No particular difficulty.

A beautiful glimpse of the wild landscapes of the Cévennes.
Not enough viewpoints for our liking.

Hello, we did this walk, which is indeed a beautiful continuous climb with magnificent scenery. The descent is rocky too. We stayed within the indicated time, including a picnic, while walking. Highly recommended. Thank you.

Thank you for this superb hike. The views of the Cévennes are absolutely magnificent.
We did the route in reverse, which is not difficult except for the descent at the end of the route, which is steep and very rocky.

It's very easy to follow the route on your smartphone. The hike is beautiful. The route is clear and well marked. The estimated time is spot on (we did it in 4½ hours with a picnic). The weather was great too. It's a moderate hike! The 3-hour climb at the start is tough. It would have been nice to indicate the starting point and the direction to take to reach the PR trailhead, that's all. Thank you, we'll continue to follow you.
