Around the Touche-Poupard reservoir

A pleasant walk around the Touche-Poupard reservoir, presenting no difficulty other than its length. There are plenty of spots along the route where you can stop for a nice break.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the school and town hall in Clavé.

(S/E) Join the main road and follow it to the right as it goes downhill, then turn onto the road on the right just before the bridge. Continue for about 400 m until you reach a small car park on the left.

(1) At the small car park with an information sign, follow the small path leading off to the right and continue along the riverbank.

(2) At the northern end of the reservoir, cross a footbridge and immediately take the first path on the left. When you reach a track, turn left and continue to the hamlet of La Bourgogne.

(3) Take the path leading down to the left by the bins. Turn right when you reach the lake and continue along its bank until you come to a tarmac road; follow it straight ahead. Join the D329. Turn left and walk for about a hundred metres.

(4) Turn right towards La Prunerie, then immediately take the path branching off to your left. Follow the reservoir for about 3 km.

(5) When the route no longer follows the riverbank, head up the path and then take the road on the right. Just before reaching La Braconnerie, turn onto the path on the left and head towards Les Ralières.

(6) Follow the road that climbs up to the right, keep left then turn right again. At the three-way junction (marker 180), go left then veer right and continue down the road, which becomes a track after the Protellerie junction.

(7) Take the first path on the left, which is narrower. After passing a pond on your left, take the first path on the left and you’ll come to a tarmac road.

(8) Turn left then right towards the Touche-Poupard dam. Keep going straight on.

(9) At the “30 km/h” sign, take the path leading down to the right. Cross the stream, veer to the right, then quickly take the path leading back up to your left. At the top, keep to your left, join the road and follow it to the right.

(10) In the right-hand bend, look for a barrier on the left-hand side of the road, go through it and follow the path that runs alongside the reservoir. Follow this path for about 4 km; this single path continues through woodland until it reaches a tarmac road.

(11) Turn left onto this road. Pass under a high-voltage power line and take the first path on the right. At the next road, take the sharp left-hand bend, then take the first small, inconspicuous and heavily overgrown path on your right. Turn left onto the next road and continue for a few dozen metres.

(12) Turn right towards L’Épinaie and continue to the next road.

(13) Turn left, then left again at the next junction.

(14) At the Sablière junction, turn left to return to the starting point (S/E).

We didn't do the small loop to the north. Nice hike for three quarters of the way: shaded and varied. The last quarter is less interesting. Another route would be welcome for this part.

A very pleasant route linking the Gâtine countryside to the winding shores of Lake Touche Poupard.
This site, developed 30 years ago, has regained its wild appearance. The trees planted at the time have grown, the birds are singing at the top of their voices and the well-marked paths are easily accessible.
This route is interesting in that, depending on your preference, you can walk the whole thing (22 km and a few hundred metres) or just part of it (5 or 18 km).

Please note: this is a challenging route. The difficulty isn’t just down to the 22km distance (it was actually a bit longer, as we opted for the most direct route via the road and ended up covering 22.2km); the section after the dam involves quite a climb, and the paths are steep and slippery. There were quite a few muddy sections when we did it, and we had to wade through two streams, with our feet in the water. It’s a shame there aren’t any tables or benches near the dam. Quite a bit of tarmac, though...

Hello. A lovely walk. Two paths badly damaged by about twenty quad bikes ahead of us – a shame. (Can you do anything about it?)
