The Donia Quarry

A 3-hour walk in the commune of Saivres along the sunken paths that are still accessible. You’ll explore the banks of the Chambon downstream of the Touche Poupart dam, a stretch offering a view of the Donia quarry, its working face and its spoil heap. The walk ends with a stroll through an arboretum.

Description of the walk

Park at the village hall or, better still, at the sports ground. The start and finish are on the Magnou side, in front of the tennis court.

(S/E) As you leave the stadium, turn right towards Le Magnou and take the first path on the left, which is tarmacked at the start. This path takes a sharp right-hand bend and leads to a crossroads at a place called La Coutancière.

(1) First turn right then left; continue to the next crossroads and turn right towards the bridge. Do not cross the bridge; instead, take a small road on the left just before it, heading towards Maunay. Walk alongside the River Chambon and follow the road until you find yourself amongst the houses. Look carefully to your right: you will see a footbridge spanning the River Chambon.

(2) Cross this footbridge (it is open to the public, though the surrounding area is private). Take the opportunity to enjoy the view and walk quietly along the path (not shown on the IGN map), which can be muddy after rain, until you reach a road that is very busy during the week (keep an eye on where the path joins the road if you are with children).

(3) Turn right, ignore the road branching off to the right, then take the first path on the left towards Le Pinier. At the junction with another path, keep to the left. Walk through the hamlet and head straight on towards La Chaillochère.

(4) Once at the junction at the end of the path, carry on straight ahead, veering slightly to the left after the house. You are not entering a farm; you are indeed on a public path. Follow the main path; the others are merely field entrances that would only waste your time. As you head downhill, you’ll see the excavations of the Donia quarry ahead of you.

Leaving the track, walk past an isolated house – the grounds of which are private – and you’ll reach the roadside (take care outside weekends). Turn right onto the bridge and continue along the left-hand side of the road until you reach a tarpaulin storage area.

(5) Turn left towards Les Vallées and, at the end of the track, turn right onto a path that joins it at a sharp angle and climb up to the road leading to La Fragnelière. Turn left, cross the farmyard and follow the path slightly to your right to reach a small road.

(6) Turn left towards the hamlets of L’Houmeau and La Mardière.

(7) Between the two, a small communal washhouse makes a good halfway stop. At the junction just outside La Mardière (elevation 152), carry on straight ahead and continue to the next crossroads (elevation 149), where you should turn left towards Puymorillon. Continue downhill for about 400 metres.

(8) Leave the road and take the path on your right. Follow it until you reach the tarmac again. Once back on the road, turn left, then left again about fifty metres further on towards the arboretum.

(9). Continue downhill for about 400 metres.

(10) Take the path on your right which leads back up towards Le Magnou (not shown on the IGN map). When you reach the wide path you took at the start, turn right and then right again in the centre of the hamlet to reach the sports ground and the tennis courts. You have arrived (S/E).

The walk went well and is well worth a look – a mix of stony paths and streams, really lovely

I used Google Maps to help me in a few places.

Enjoy the walk!

Hello,
This walk around the Donia quarry allowed us to discover some absolutely magnificent sites and a delightful architectural heritage, and we were lucky enough to cross paths with several of our fellow earthlings: horses, birds, roe deer, frogs, cows, bulls, donkeys, dogs…
The flora and fauna blend together to create a perfect harmony, into which it is a delight to slip.

However, we were unable to cross the arboretum. The directions, which had been very precise up to that point, didn’t lead us there. The map mentions an unpaved path, but at that particular spot, they were all paved!! So we walked to a road and followed it, without really knowing where it would take us. We don’t have the necessary knowledge to use the map provided with the guide properly.

This was our first hike and I can tell you that for those who don’t do sport, or aren’t fit enough, it’s tough!!! There are certain sections where it’s a proper climb, with your feet in the mud, in the rain, snow and cold… When we do it again, the weather will be fine!

We’ll do this walk again, so we can find out which was the right path.

Thank you for your work.

A lovely walk, but the estimated time is a bit on the high side, as it took us 2 hours 30 minutes instead of 3 hours 25 minutes, and we didn’t even push ourselves. The only disappointment was the arboretum mentioned in the description, as we didn’t actually go through it. And as the two stretches of road near the quarry might be dangerous during the week, we’d recommend doing this walk at the weekend.

There were 12 of us on the walk and we had to turn back twice after coming to junctions! Maybe we misread the route or there wasn’t enough information! The route is lovely and everyone really enjoyed the sunken paths!

Thank you, Valerie Pigeau
What else can I say... other than that the description seems very detailed to me and the layout is correct.
It’s strange that everything turned out so badly for the three of you. Just to be sure, did you have the PDF document with you?
Let’s let the author read your comment and reply to you. Otherwise, we’ll wait for feedback from other walkers

That says it all. See the replies to your questionnaire.
There were three of us on the hike, and we regularly found ourselves confused by incorrect signposting when we reached junctions where several paths met. As for the arboretum that was supposed to be on the route, it wasn’t there at all.
