Around the Costeplane Waterfall

A variation on the Lauzet hike
The first section takes you along the route of a railway line that was never completed, then on to the Costeplane waterfalls. The second section, via mule tracks, allows you to explore the work of our ancestors: the terraced fields, the old sheepfold at Falalo, and the hamlet of Dramonasc with its chapel.

Description of the walk

Park in the village of Le Lauzet; there is a large car park next to the lake.

(S/E) Leave the car park by heading uphill to the left along Rue du Pied du Village or Rue d’en Haut. These two streets run through the village.

(1) On leaving the village, head downhill towards the cemetery, keeping the same direction, until you reach the old railway line.

(2) Stay on the old railway line and continue straight ahead.

(3) Cross over the Ubaye before reaching the old tunnel.

(4) Retrace your steps, crossing the Ubaye again, and arrive at the fork from the outward journey.

(3) Head down to the right, passing through a small passageway under the railway line. Join the road that takes you over a bridge across the Ubaye and continue along the road until you pass between two houses.

(5) Take the small path running alongside the house on the left. This path cuts across a circular section of the road, which you will rejoin further up. Follow the road until the tarmac ends.

(6) Just after the ford, leave the main track and head uphill on the right bank, following the Ravin de la Blache. Very soon, a path stays closest to the stream, offering views of the waterfalls. You’ll eventually reach a small beach.

(7) Retrace your steps, then head back up to the right towards the road. There are no markings on this section, but the path is visible.

(8) Follow the road to the right, which descends slightly to the hamlet of Costeplane.

(9) In the middle of the hamlet, at a bend, leave the road and head up to the left along a small path. Quite quickly, the path becomes a balcony path; as you go, the view opens up, offering a panorama as far as Lake Serre-Ponçon. At the highest point, you arrive at the old Falalo farm.

(10) Cross the large clearing, keeping to the left (you can also cross by staying in the middle of the clearing). As the path is rarely used, it is no longer clearly visible. You will reach a junction with a path.

(11) Continue left, towards the hamlet of Dramonasc, to visit its chapel at the end.

(12) Retrace your steps back to the fork.

(11) Start descending to the left, following a magnificent old stone wall, and join a track suitable for vehicles with space to park a few cars. Continue down to a fence on the left

(13) Walk down past the gate to reach the road.

(14) Follow the road to the left as it descends to the medieval bridge known as the “Roman” bridge. Cross the Ubaye on this bridge and head back up to the village via a path, turning right. You will reach the fork from the outward journey.

(1) Return to the car park, crossing the village via one of the two streets: Rue du Pied du Village or Rue d’en Haut (S/E).

Worth a visit

Depending on the time of day, you may have the chance to see groups going canyoning
The Costeplane Waterfall is a listed site under the decree of 9 January 1939.

The unfinished railway project from the early 20th century left behind the tunnel. The railway line was intended to link Chorges to Barcelonnette.

The so-called ‘Roman’ bridge is actually Romanesque.

we didn't follow (or find) the route at the start because the waterfall was signposted at the beginning of the village, so we only did part of the circuit in the opposite direction until we were a little higher than the waterfall, then went to see the Roman bridge where we found the starting point for the map.
so we walked part of the route starting at the tunnels and then retraced our steps, as the waterfall was no longer signposted at that point.

it's not the most beautiful waterfall in the area, but we were able to watch people canyoning

Hello,
Firstly, I would like to point out that the elevation gain is less than stated, at only 420 metres.
It is better to do this walk in May or June, when the water flow is high, rather than in September, for example.
We didn't go as far as the tunnel or the chapel.
There is a lovely balcony trail from the village of Costeplane (note: the trailhead on the left in the middle of the hamlet is not very visible), with some very short, slightly vertiginous sections.
There is a beautiful view of Serre-Ponçon from the Falalo farm, where we had a picnic.
The hike ended at 3pm, so we took the opportunity to spend some time by the lake (refreshments, walk, pedal boats, etc.).
In summary, the highlights of this lovely hike are:
the bridges over the Ubaye and the view of the impressive gorges on the way there and back, the waterfalls, the viewpoint at Falalo, and the balcony trail with views of the valley.

A lovely walk, taken during a snowless winter at this altitude. The path between Costeplane and Dramonasc is starting to crumble in places, so you need to be careful. Otherwise, nothing to report. A pleasant route.

A lovely walk with some beautiful views of the waterfalls. This is the busiest section of the Lao trail. We chose to avoid the old railway line and the tunnel, heading straight for the waterfalls.
After that, the balcony path is very pretty, not very busy, and also offers lovely views of the Ubaye.
The descent back down to the village is less interesting and a bit long, but it ends at the pretty old bridge and the impressive narrow gorges of the river.
