Around Guerlesquin

Guerlesquin, a small town full of character, was known in the 11th century for its fairs. From the 17th century, beautiful buildings remain in the town centre: the Présidial, the Market Halls and the Church. The town is close to the Étang du Guic, where two fine sandy beaches await walkers.
After walking around the lake, we explore the nearby forest, moving in turn from Finistère into Côtes-d’Armor before returning to Finistère. Indeed, it is the river ‘Le Guic’ that forms the departmental boundary.

Description of the walk

The route starts at Place du Martray. This square, lined with granite buildings, is bordered to the east by the church and to the west by the old market halls (now the tourist office) and then the Présidial.

(S/E) Opposite the church, turn right onto Rue du Général de Gaulle, which continues as Rue Hent Even Gwen. Pass a road on your right leading to a supermarket.
At the fork, turn right onto La route du Guic.

(1) At the bottom of the street, which bends to the left, go under the main road through the tunnel and arrive directly at the pond.

Where the road surface changes (from tarmac to gravel), take a small path on the left which leads to a beach. Continue along the edge of the lake, then cross the dam. After the dam, turn right and take a small grassy path on the right which runs along the opposite bank of the lake. This path ends at the D42 road.

(2) Follow it to the left for about 100m, then take the path on the right (signpost: ‘les deux étangs’).
This path leads to the hamlet of Menez Riou, which you pass through.

(3) At a left-hand bend, take the path on the right which ends at a road; take this road to the left: an 18% gradient!

(4) Turn right towards Kergolet (panoramic view of Guerlesquin on the right).

(5) Take the path on the left at the GR®380 signpost. Then, on the road, turn right. You pass through Kervretel and then, at a field entrance on the right, leave the path on your left and take the one on the right after the field entrance. You arrive at the old Kergariou mill.

(6) To cross the River Guic, use the footbridge on the left. Continue leftwards to the stopover lodge. The path becomes a tarmac road. Pass through Kergariou then continue along the road which bends to the right. It leads to a junction on the D42.

(7) Note the crucifix opposite, on the right-hand side. Take the D42 to the right.

(8) After 500 metres, take a path on the left before the gable end of a house in Saint-Ener. This path leads to a meadow which you should follow on the right to take the path that immediately branches off to the left. At the bottom of the descent, leave the entrance to the field on your right and take the path on the left. At a waterfall, continue straight ahead along the path to reach La Villeneuve. Take the road on the right. You will arrive at Keraël Castle.

(9) Take the path straight ahead. At the ruins of Le Quélennec, take the shaded path on the right.

(10) Cross through Tromolouarn and take the path on the right (green postbox). Cross the stream via the footbridge and continue straight ahead along the path (ignore the signposts).

(11) At the fork in the path, take the one on the right. There is a fairly steep climb through the forest. At a junction, continue to the right. The path leads to a road, which you take to the right at a farm shed.

(12) The road crosses a stony track which you take to the left. At Kerfoen, the track becomes a tarmac road which you take to the right. Go straight across the crossroads.
Head back down towards Guerlesquin via Hent ar Feunteun. At the bottom, turn right.

(13) Turn left in front of a fountain. This cobbled street leads you right in front of the Présidial. Turn left to reach Place du Martray (S/E).

A very good hike, a lovely route with two climbs: one short climb at 18% on a tarmac road (end of the GR 380 towards No. 4), and the other (11 to 12) a fairly steep, seemingly endless climb, but one to tackle gently whilst enjoying the scenery; there are plenty of obstacles in the form of fallen trees.
Note: We completed the 17.40 km route in 6 hours 32 minutes (including breaks and photos), setting off at around 9.30 am. At around 12.30 pm, you’ll have the chance to stop at No. 6 for ‘lunch’ in a small renovated house available to hikers (table and fireplace) with a little guest book.
Don’t forget to visit the centre of GUERLESQUIN, a charming little town.

A pleasant, peaceful walk, though there’s a bit too much road on this route. The centre of Guerlesquin is interesting in terms of its heritage, and the walk around the lake is very enjoyable.

The two climbs mentioned are indeed quite steep, especially the last one after 14 km, which seems to go on forever. But the paths are lovely and very pleasant to walk along.
