Around Gourdon via the Gorges du Loup

After visiting the hilltop village of Gourdon, the old mule track will take you to a natural site nestled at the bottom of a steep-sided valley. The Gorges du Loup reveal themselves to our eyes. Numerous waterfalls, the Courmes waterfall, the Saut du Loup and aerial views from the Pont de l'Abîme are all on the menu for this beautiful hike.

Description of the walk

Park in the Rouguière car park in the centre of the village.

(S/E) Perched on its eagle's nest, head towards the entrance to Gourdon, where marker 6 is located.

(1) Turn left and head towards Pont du Loup, our next destination. This old mule track once linked Gourdon to Pont du Loup. Pass the Foulon Aqueduct.

(2) At marker 5, turn left and continue in the same direction until you reach a crossroads.

(3) Continue straight ahead through this wooded area towards Pont du Loup. You will see marker 4.

(4) At marker 3 (marked on map number 304), turnleft onto Route de l'ancien Chemin de Fer, towards Pont du Loup. This section is paved, so take care. Walk past the station called "Halte du Loup", a remnant of this era, and follow the road to marker 2 at the entrance to the town of Pont du Loup. The railway bridge was destroyed in August 1944. The 50-metre-high bridge piers are still standing.

(5) At this crossroads, continue straight ahead for about 50 metres until you reach the wooden statue of a schoolboy. At this point, take the stairs leading to the Route de Grasse. Turn left towards the bridge.

(6) At the end of the bridge, turn left onto Chemin de la Confiserie. This tarmac road quickly becomes a path running along the left bank of the Loup.

(7) At the end of the first bridge, turn left for a few metres, then right and walk along the cliff. After the second bridge, follow the path, which can be difficult to find but is definitely there.

(8) Leave the riverbank and climb up a scree slope. Looking up at the cliff, you can see the location of the old Route des Gorges du Loup, our next destination. At this point, the remains of the road, built in 1904 and paved, are clearly visible. Follow this road northwards, which runs along the cliff. A few boulders block the way, but you can get past them without any trouble. Continue to the end of this old road.

(9) On the right, you will see the exit of a tunnel. At this point, put on your yellow vest and lighting for the next tunnel, and continue along the road with caution. Walk along the Cascade des Courmes waterfall (height 20 m). Cross the small tunnel with caution, and on the right, you will see the Saut du Loup waterfall (see practical information). Continue along the road for about 300 m until you reach a grassy crossroads.

(10) Turn left onto this grassy ramp, which is quickly cemented. Walk past a private chapel, turn right just after the house and follow a little-used path that leads to a track.

(11) On the left, a gate closes off the track. Walk about ten metres to the right and the path starts on the left. Follow it to the Foulon Aqueduct

(12) At this point, turn left and follow the aqueduct to the water treatment building. The structure winds its way through a beautiful, airy forest.

(13) Continue straight ahead for about a hundred metres on a cement footbridge called the Pont de l'Abîme, which is above the void.

(14) From here, there is a magnificent view overlooking the Gorges du Loup, the village of Courmes, the vertiginous cliffs and the Cascade des Courmes waterfall. Turn around.

(13) At the corner of the building, turn left and follow the track to the Route de Gréolières.

(15) Turn left, follow the road carefully and put on a yellow vest.

(16) Cross the road carefully and cut across the bend. Once back on the road, cross again carefully and continue through the forest using the Visorando app.

(17) At the edge of the wooded area, enter the Parc de La Source Parfumée. This space, surrounded by lavender, exudes tranquillity. Turn left onto a grassy path which once again offers two remarkable viewpoints over the gorges and the coastline. Take the steps that lead back to the road.

(18) At this bend in the road, take a path immediately on the left, which quickly disappears. Cross a few terraces. Use the app.

(19) Carefully follow the Gréolières road on the left until you reach a path on the left.

(20) Follow it below the Gréolières road and cross a wooded area and then a field to reach the finish area (S/E).
