Description of the walk

Saint-Fris Lake car park. Viewpoint overlooking the village of Bassoues.

(S/E) Walk past the Chapel of Saint-Fris, follow the lake to the end, then turn right onto the path that crosses the stream feeding the lake. At the junction, turn right onto the D943, walk past the rugby stadium, then take the path leading uphill to the left. Walk past the Basilica of Saint-Fris and continue to the junction in front of the keep.

(1) Turn right onto the rampart walk, follow the fortification wall along a path that branches off to the left after the bend in the rampart walk. Follow the fortification wall until you reach the street on the left.

(2) Take the street on the left (Rue des Écoles) which leads to the centre of the village of Bassoues. Turn into the second street on the right (Grand Rue) then pass under the market hall. After the market hall, turn right into the street (Rue des Arceaux) then turn left into Rue Maubour. Continue along this road until you reach the junction with the main street (Grand Rue).

(3) On the main road, turn right and continue straight on along the D943 until you reach the junction at the village exit. Take care. Turn right at the cross until you reach the next junction, then turn right again. Pass the agricultural co-operative and continue until you reach the junction with a track branching off to the right.

(4) Turn right onto the path that climbs up to the ridge at Mestre Guillem, then follow the path to the right which runs behind the house. Continue along this ridge path, which begins to descend through a copse. Follow this path to the crossroads.

(5) Turn left, pass an old wash house and then cross a small bridge. After the bridge, turn left. Once in the meadow, follow the path which climbs to the right up to the embankment. Walk along the embankment and take the path which climbs up to the ridge.

(6) On the ridge, continue to the right and follow this path to the junction with the D943. Turn right, then left, and continue along the D943, crossing a fairly narrow bridge with care. After the bridge, take the next path branching off to the right, which leads to the lake car park (S/E).

Disappointing!
The yellow PR signposting is sometimes visible but often non-existent (or perhaps hidden?). The main attraction of the route lies in the heritage of Bassoues, which is truly a lovely old village. But once you leave the village, you’re walking along a very busy county road, and that’s really a bit of a slog!!!
As for Lake St Fris, it does at least offer a lovely view of Bassoues, but it’s the size of a small pond and lacks any real charm.

It’s a bit of a long drive… but the journey itself is lovely, with stops at various points of interest: a farm, a wash house, a pond…
