At the foot of Azkar from the Urbia Pass

A trail walk that allows you to discover the main peaks of the Basque Country and also offers a beautiful view of the coast. Beautiful old oak trees line the route. The pottocks (Basque horses that live in the wild) are very friendly.

Description of the walk

Start the hike at the Urbia Pass, above Zugarramurdi. The pottoks (horses) will be there to welcome you.

Take the track heading due east.

(1) To your right, in the distance, you’ll see Alkuruntz (the pointed peak) and, to its left, the Gorras range.

(2) Reach the Loiarako Pass, then continue to the right after admiring the view of the coast to the north.

(3) At the junction, head straight ahead, south-east.

(4) At the junction, turn slightly left. Walk alongside a spruce forest.

(5) At the three-way junction, take the path on the left which climbs and then descends to a memorial stone at the foot of Azkar.

You will see the single path leading to the summit ahead of you. The round trip takes 20 minutes.

(6) The return route follows the track that runs alongside the sheepfold.

Return to the (5) and finish the hike by following the same route as on the way out.
