The hike starts in Mittlach, a small village in the Munster Valley. Park in the church car park.
(S/E) Turn right onto Rue Raymond Poincaré, then left onto Rue Erbersch.
Follow this street on the left for about 500 metres.
(1) At a farm, take a small road on your right before a tin building. Continue for 100 metres and you will see a path that was restored by the young people of Mittlach in 1988, marked with a blue triangle.
This is the start of a fairly steep 2 km climb alongside a stream; cross small wooden bridges, rocky scree and the stream itself.
(2) When you reach the forest road, continue to follow the blue triangle (note that it is no longer there) and turn left, not right, or you will end up going back downhill.
About 500m further on, follow the blue cross down to Lake Fischboedle. Be careful on your knees.
You will reach the lake after about 1.5 km of descent.
(3) Take the dyke. Enjoy the location, which is not very busy.
After a short break, you're off again, heading towards Schiessrothried Lake. To do this, take the path marked with a red rectangle to the right of the small house. The climb is about 1.5 km long and quite intense.
(4) When you reach the lake, do not take the dyke but turn left and follow the blue rectangle trail that climbs towards Kerbholz. Caution! This is a very technical section on the mountainside.
(5) Climb over scree, climb ladders, etc. Be careful, the safety lines put in place by the Vosges club were broken when I passed through. Do not hold on to them if this is still the case!!! After 3km of climbing, you will arrive at Kerbholz.
(6) Then head towards Kastelbergwasen, still following the blue rectangle trail.
At Kastelbergwasen, enjoy the view and, below you, you will see the village of Mittlach. It's time to head back.
For the return journey, continue to follow the blue rectangle for about 900 metres towards the Tour de la Bresse.
(7) Be careful, you need to turn left onto a yellow cross trail leading to Lake Altenweiher.
(8) Cross the dyke and continue to follow the yellow cross for about 800m.
(9) Turn left, following the yellow disc. Further on, you have two options.
(10) Either follow the forest road to the Kolbenwasen car park, or, as shown on the map, take the path on the left, which is still marked with yellow circles but is called "Mittlach direct". Personally, I followed "Mittlach direct" but be warned, the slope is steep.
(11) Once at the Kolbenwasen car park, follow the yellow cross markings to the village of Mittlach and the church car park (S/E). This is a tarmac road, which gives your legs a chance to rest.
