Depart from the car park on the left of the road entering Sondernach, opposite Square Anne-Aymone.
(S/E) From the car park, walk up the main road for 200 m, passing the town hall (crossing Rue du Landersbach). Turn left onto a path marked with a red circle and yellow triangle (towards Hüenleskritt). Ignore a path leading off to the right and continue uphill, following the red circle and yellow triangle. Enter the forest.
(1) At an intersection, after 100 m in the forest, ignore the two paths on the right (including the one marked with a Yellow Triangle) and take the path on the left marked with a Red Ring. You will come to a tarmac road. Ignore the path opposite and take the road, which slopes slightly downhill, until you reach a bend and a bridge.
(2) Cross the bridge and turn right onto a paved road marked with a yellow cross (leaving the path marked with a red ring). After 500 metres of climbing on the small paved road, take the forest path on the left (yellow cross) and ignore the path opposite. Climb up through the forest alongside a stream offering a refreshing dip.
(3) Cross a bridge and at the next intersection, ignore the path branching off to the left at a hairpin bend and cross the stream again onto the path marked with a yellow cross.
(4) At the next intersection, ignore the path branching off to the left. Follow the path marked with yellow crosses, ignoring the path on the right at the end of the hairpin bend just after the bridge. Climb a pleasant winding path, guided by the yellow crosses.
(5) At the last bend (meadow visible on the left), turn right towards Rothenbrunnen, guided by the Yellow Disc markings, leaving Lameysberg (Yellow Cross) and Brobachrücken (Blue Diamond) on your left. About 200 m further on, join a path opposite (yellow disc) and leave the direction of Ried on your left.
(6) 100 m after the junction towards Ried, at the end of the bend, do not miss the path on the left that climbs slightly and leave the wide forest path that descends to the right (no sign at this point).
(7) At the crossroads, ignore the two paths on the right and take the one on the far left, following the yellow disc markings. Continue slightly uphill, pass through a wooden gate and join the tarmac road. Walk 150 m up the road and, at the sign for the farmhouse inn, turn left to reach the Ferme Auberge du Rothenbrunnen.
(8) Enjoy the view, walk past the farmhouse inn and, after passing through a gate, take the path marked with blue diamond signs towards Ried de Sondernach. Do not attempt to take the two uphill paths (unless you are feeling particularly brave and want to make a round trip to the nearby Petit Ballon summit). Continue slightly downhill, enjoying the scenery, and look for the start of a path on the left at the end of the right-hand bend.
(9) Leave the wide path and head towards Christlesgut. Go through a gate on the left and begin the descent into the meadow on a path marked with blue diamond signs towards Brobachrücken. After passing through another gate, join a path marked with blue diamond signs (ignore the yellow cross path towards Lameysberg). You will come to a wide path lined with some remarkable trees, which you should follow downhill.
(10) Turn left downhill towards Breitenbach on the path marked with a blue diamond. Ignore the path uphill towards Steinberg/Petit Ballon (red triangle). 50 m after two magnificent beech trees, ignore the path coming from the right and continue downhill along a fence.
(11) Leave the path to Breitenbach and the red triangle markings on your right and follow the blue diamond markings towards Sondernach. Descend along the fence, keeping to the right. At the bottom, enjoy the view of the village of Sondernach. Leave a path ascending to the right and continue downhill, following the blue diamond markings. You will reach a three-way junction.
(12) Leave the wide path towards Breitenbach and follow the path on the left, marked with a blue diamond and signposted towards Meyersbuhl/Metzeral. 150 metres further down, at a slightly marshy area, turn right and follow the red ring and blue diamond markings. About 100 metres further down, turn left downhill (ignoring a path uphill on the right) and join a wide forest path.
(13) Take this path to the left, following the red ring markings and signs for Sondernach. Do not continue straight ahead. Continue to Sondernach and, at the town hall, turn right to return to the car park opposite Square Anne-Aymone (S/E).
