Description of the walk

Start : Car park located at Roussillon village southwest entrance.
⚠️ There is a difficult part at the end of this walk : please read "Practical information section."

(S/E) Exit the car park and turn left on Gordes road. When you reach n°291, turn left (South-East) and keep walking along the road and houses. Leave private roads going down to the right towards houses. After those junctions, take right when the road splits in half. Go downhill until you reach an open area at the bottom of the road. Keep the sewage plant on your left-hand side. Carry on straight on the path while "admiring the ochre cliffs on your right-hand side".

(1) At the end of the path, enter the wooded area in front of you. At the beginning, the path isn't obvious (it winds between the trees) then, it slowly becomes more and more obvious as you enter the ochre walls (superb red and yellow canyon). The path goes down the bottom of the canyon, however, bear left taking the steep path (difficult area) for about 50 meters through the red ochre cliff until you reach a road.

(2) Turn right and at the junction, walk along Avenue Jean Étienne Astier (towards Bonnieux). Go past Saint-Joseph car park on your right-hand side. At the roundabout, walk along D104, towards Murs Gordes Apt.

(3) As you reach n° 400, 402, 404, 406, take the footpath on the right (South), between houses. As you reach a road, turn left (South-East) onto the Chemin des Marquets. The road becomes a gravel path. Carry on the same way. The path will become narrower and will go down to the left.

(4) The path will split in half. Ignore the path made of stones going up to take the path going downhill on the right. Stay on the gravel path. Join a path going toward several houses. Go down this path, always keeping straight ahead until you reach the road.

(5) Take right (South-West) here. Crosse over the road junction towards Les Huguets hamlet. At the waymarker, Les Huguets, walk towards Goult. As you enter the hamlet, stay left on the pavement and keep walking along the Chemin des Plaines.

(6) Just before Saint-Sers Sud waymarker, turn right (North-West) onto the gravel path along the cypress hedge. At the road junction, turn right (North).

(7) Reach the road nearby Savone and cross it straight ahead to carry on walking along the gravel path. The road goes uphill (North-West). After going past a house built with stones, at the path junction, turn right, yellow waymarkers. Keep following the yellow waymarkers (the main footpath is first graveled then paved), ignoring paths going left and right, until you reach the Route de Goult (D104).

(8) Turn right (East) along D104 and then left along Chemin de la Garenne (still following the yellow waymarker).

(9) As you reach the top of Chemin de la Garenne, ignore the yellow waymarker on the right and carry straight on. The path becomes a footpath bearing right. In the distance, admire views of the Roussillon village and the ochre cliffs. Reach Chemin de la Garenne a little further down again where you turn left (North) and at the junction, carry straight on Goult road, then on the Avenue Jean Etienne Astier.

(2) Walk past the junction already walked when you started and carry on the D105 until you reach Roussillon. After going past the ochre cliffs, carry straight on to visit the village. Walk up to the castle and walk through the colorful streets. Go back down to the car park by taking the Passage du Mistral or the Rue des Lauriers (S/E).

Parking : Park at the car park located at Roussillon village southwest entrance; at the top of the Gorges road. (Car parks in Roussillon are not free during summer times).

Terrain : '⚠️ There is a difficult part at the end of this walk : please read "Practical information section."
Some parts of the walks are along roads as there are no alternative footpaths in those areas. (Many private properties).
A large part of this walk is shady.

Alternative route: There is one difficult part at the end of the walk (waypoint (2)), which can be bypassed via the following: as you leave the car park, you can shorten the walk by taking right along Gordes road to enter the village. Stay on the main road (Rue des Bourgades) then Avenue de la Burlière to reach back the waypoint (2).

Worth a visit

On top of doing this walk, you can visit the ochre trail and the ochre conservatory (you will pass in front of it during the walk).

You will see the fairy chimneys in the ochre trail and on the cliff overhanging the fairy valley in the very first part of the route or from the village.

You will find more walks on the Roussillon' village website with scientific explanations and the legend explaining the reason of the coloring of the cliffs.

Difficult to access at first, the street leading to the car park is a no-entry road
As for the Ochre Trail, which you have to pay to use, the start in Roussillon is very poorly signposted, and you end up going round in circles in the streets

All car parks are chargeable from 1st March.
Free parking grimaud coming from st saturnin, in the meadows. It is signposted "accés piétons village", about 1 km from the village, passing through the meadows.
A well-explained, pleasant walk through the pine forest on an ochre-coloured path, among vines, lavender and olive trees.

It's a beautiful walk at the start, past the foot of the ochre walls, and then it's a classic hike, with the emphasis on walking and completing the loop. But it's still pleasant, among the pines, thyme and rosemary!

We did this hike during the week, with fog lifting afterwards. We were all familiar with the ochres and Roussillon, but the fog added a certain charm to this easy hike.

Please note. From no. 291 up to the point (1), this is private property that you are not allowed to cross - the forest paths are private. The owner accosted us and said that he had not agreed to hikers passing through his land. The route needs to be revisited, but it won't be as interesting because we won't be able to see the ochre cliffs up close...

Route taken on 05/04/2023.
The car park indicated was chargeable for the day, but not very expensive.
After 700 m, don't hesitate to continue along the path to the left for 120 metres to admire the beautiful ochre cliffs and retrace your steps to take the right-hand route again.
Between 1.1 km and 1.37 km (including the diversions) there is a lot of vegetation and the path is not very visible: follow the GPX track as closely as possible using a GPS. From Km 1.37 to Km 1.5, overcome the difficulty mentioned by the author: path not very well marked, steep, you need to use your hands but it's not impossible (walking poles are cumbersome for this section).
At Km 6.3 turn left for a hundred metres or so to see what must have been old quarries.
A very pleasant route overall, thanks to the author.

We only did the northern loop, going anti-clockwise from Roussillon.
Once at the bottom of the Val des Fées, we followed the track through the little-used valley to get back to the road. But at the end of the valley, we couldn't continue to the left as indicated (too steep a slope to climb). We had to turn back.

Unfortunately, I didn't find the exit difficult - just a rope across a hole. I didn't venture there. I had to go back and forth, but as it's so beautiful, it didn't bother me.
Nice free spot to see the ochres of Roussillon.
Thank you

A walk with no real interest around the villas of Roussillon and the vineyards to the south of the village. Only at the end of the walk will you cross a forest and take a dirt track.
