Description of the route

The route starts from Place des Frères Genét.

(S/E) From the car park, turn right towards Auxerre via the D965. 1 km after leaving Toucy, turn left towards Parly. Follow the D48 for 4 km; it is a lovely, shaded, downhill road leading to the village of Parly.

(1) At the crossroads, with the church in view, turn left twice towards Échelotte, Merry and Les Chênons, climb for 500 m and follow Rue du Mont Chaumont to the left (note: some road signs are faded). On this beautiful uphill road of around 2.5 km, you can admire the lush, open countryside before crossing through woodland to reach the plateau at a place called La Fumée. At the stop sign, continue straight on towards La Faisanderie and Les Tremblats, turn right and pass in front of the Les Tremblats pheasantry.

(2) At the viewpoint, continue along the same road.

(3) 100 m after the hamlet of Les Archons, turn left. At the stop sign, you’ll reach the D955; take this road to the right for 400 m.

(4) At a place called Les Placeaux, after the large bend, turn onto the first road on the left (D154), towards Les Ormes.

(5) When you reach the hamlet of Froville, in front of the castle gates, turn right onto the D454 towards Aillant-sur-Tholon for 1 km.

(6) Turn left towards Boisserelle and Roncemay Golf Club. Go round the golf course, keeping the fence on your left. Continue on the RD57 to reach Les Ormes.

(7) In the village of Les Ormes, stay on the main road which heads slightly north-west. Cross the D154. Head towards Sommecaise via the D14 (north-west), and you will see Bontin Castle on your left (you can drive up the castle’s driveway). Continue down into the valley where the Vrin, a tributary of the Yonne, flows. After the bridge, turn right.

(8) Cross the D3, heading towards La Brimbalerie.

(9) Continue on the D14.

(10) Go straight on towards Grandchamp. The road is lovely and quiet. After Les Petits Brossards, head down towards Grandchamp.

(11) At the stop sign, cross the D950 and continue for 200 m towards Grandchamp Castle.

(12) You can stop in front of the gate and admire the harmony of this beautiful estate. Head back to the crossroads. Take the small road opposite, lined with a tree and eleven pollarded trees. Continue straight on, along the Ouanne Valley. In places, you’ll follow the old railway line (now the Cyclorail). Pass Les Clausses (a farm on the right). Cross the railway line and continue on to the Villiers-Saint-Benoît leisure park. Turn left towards the village.

(13) Pass the museum. Turn right.

(14) Pass the church on your right and continue along the D950 to Dracy.

(15) Cross the railway tracks (caution: from Villiers-Saint-Benoît onwards, this section is used by a tourist train). Follow the D950, passing the cemetery on your left. This road runs partly alongside the railway line.

(16) At the end of a long bend, after passing the small road leading up to La Perreuse on the right, turn left onto the D229 towards Champeaux.

(17) Head straight for Toucy, following the Ouanne river.

(18) When you reach the D955, turn right. Continue straight on to the town centre and head to the Toucy Tourist Office on Rue Colette, to the right of the Pierre Larousse statue (S/E).

Notes

This ride requires strict adherence to the Highway Code. Remain extremely vigilant when crossing railway tracks. Whether coming from the right or the left, rail bikes and the tourist train have right of way. Do not hesitate to dismount for your own safety when crossing these tracks.

(10) At this junction, you can take the C12 on the left to head straight back down towards Villiers-Saint-Benoit (this is a 5km shortcut) through woods and meadows.

Worth a visit

(1) Parly Church with its murals.
(2) Stop on the plateau, which offers a 360° unobstructed view, to enjoy these sweeping, bird’s-eye views of the village of Merry-la-Vallée, then of the Yonne valley and the hills of Tholon and Joigny.
(6) If you take the time to look, you may spot herons in the meadows on the right, which are frequently reported.
(7) Les Ormes: a beautiful village with a traditional church.
(9) Museum of Art Objects.
(12) Château de Grandchamp.
(13) Puisaye Museum of Art and History in Villiers-Saint-Benoît.

A very interesting tour of the town, galleries and the famous Saturday morning market.

A lovely way to discover some stunning scenery. I cycled through a tourist area that makes you want to stay longer, with a route description offering alternative options (a shorter or longer route). For anyone who enjoys cycling on quiet roads, it’s a real treat.
