Cycling on both sides of the Rhine from Strasbourg

A beautiful bike ride of nearly 30 km starting from the Stade de la Meinau in Strasbourg. It will take you through the Neuhof forest, up along the Canal d'Alsace on the French side, then back along the German bank, following the Old Rhine to the Jardin des Deux Rives, which straddles the Rhine and the border between Strasbourg and Kehl.
The route favours cycle paths and trails that are closed to vehicles.

Description of the route

The start is in front of the Stade de la Meinau. There is plenty of free parking available if you need it. You can also take the tram to the start, lines A and E, Krimmeri Stade de la Meinau stop (you can take your bike on the tram).

(S/E) Take the cycle path in front of the stadium heading south, along Rue de l'Exenwoerth, then Rue Staedel. The path runs alongside the park. At the end of the park, turn right onto Avenue Christian Pfister. Go straight through two sets of traffic lights. You will arrive at Place de l'Île de France.

(1) In front of the Church of Saint Vincent de Paul, turn right onto Rue de Bourgogne and go straight through one set of traffic lights. You will come to a roundabout. Turn left onto Rue du Languedoc and take the cycle path on the pavement on the other side. Don't miss the entrance to the small Rue du Baggersee on your right. It will take you to the entrance of Baggersee, a former gravel pit that has become a popular swimming spot for local residents.

(2) From Baggersee, continue along Rue du Baggersee. You will pass the shooting range on your right, the Eyyub Sultan mosque on your left, the allotments on your right and the large south cemetery on your right. At the end of the street, you will come out onto Rue du Rhin Tortu.

(3) Turn right. At the first traffic lights, cross the street and take the cycle path on the other side, continuing in the same direction. You will soon enter the Neuhof forest.

(4) After the entrance bend, take the first carriageway on your left. At the first junction, turn right. Continue straight ahead until you reach a T-junction.

(5) Turn right until you reach a tarmac road, Chemin du Routoir.

(6) Turn left and pass in front of the restaurant Le Foyer des Pêcheurs.

(7) The road then runs alongside a lake (fishing pond) where it is not uncommon to see anglers fishing.

(8) At the end of the lake, a path branches off to your left at an acute angle. Follow it to the footbridge over the stream.

(9) You will need to dismount to cross the footbridge. On the other side, take Chemin de la Faisanderie on the right until you reach the Chêne Rebmann crossroads.

(10) At this crossroads, continue south along Chemin Krittermatterpfad.

(11) At the crossroads, turn right. Go straight ahead at the first fork.

(12) At the second fork, where the path turns sharply to the left, go straight ahead and continue until you reach a tarmac road, Route de la Schafhardt.

(13) Turn left and continue along this road until you reach Rue de la Rochelle.

(14) Turn right until you reach the end of the cycle path at the large roundabout.
Please note that this section has a bend and cars often drive at excessive speeds here. Be careful and cautious.

(15) At the junction, take the cycle path on the right. The path is signposted towards Offenburg in Germany. The path turns left and passes under the road. On the other side, turn immediately right to start the climb up the Pierre Pflimlin Bridge, still on the cycle path, which is separated from the road by a concrete wall.

(16) At the top of the bridge, as you cross the border into Germany, you will have a beautiful view of the Grand Canal d'Alsace, also known as the Rhine. To the north, you will see the Altenheimer Wassersportclub water sports centre and the dam that separates the Old Rhine from the Grand Canal d'Alsace. Continue along the path, sliding down the bridge. Pass the water sports centre and continue to the dam.

(17) At the dam, continue straight ahead. The path follows the dyke along the Old Rhine. From here, it is not uncommon to see various species of water birds: swans, geese, ducks and moorhens. You must cross the footbridge on foot.

(18) Once you are on the other side of the footbridge, continue northwards. The path arrives at another water sports centre, the Wassersport-Club Kehl-Goldscheuer, and becomes a private road.

(19) At this point, go around the water sports centre on the right. The path then climbs back up onto the dyke.

(20) Stay on the dyke and follow it northwards to the Kehl-Strasbourg agricultural dam.

(21) At the dam, descend from the dyke on the other side of the car park, go around the factory building on the left and take the path that follows the Rhine northwards to a small footbridge, which is best crossed on foot.

(22) This footbridge marks the entrance to the Jardin des Deux Rives, which was created in 2004 by the municipalities of Strasbourg and Kehl. It covers both banks of the Rhine, hence its name. From here, you are likely to encounter many pedestrians who come to stroll in the park. Please be careful. Continue on your way to the Passerelle des Deux Rives.

(23) The Passerelle des Deux Rives has two access points: a staircase for pedestrians and a long ramp for cyclists. At the top, you cross the border in the other direction and return to France.
At the bottom of the footbridge, continue straight ahead along the "Cours du Soleil" on your left and the Equestrian Centre on your right. The "Cours du Soleil" is a series of grassy embankments flanked on either side by a carriageway. Go through the gates that close off the park, cross the street and continue straight ahead to the cycle path that will take you back to Neudorf and the town centre.

(24) Turn right onto the cycle path. Go around the roundabout on the right and take Rue du Rhin Napoléon opposite. Just before you reach the railway underpass, turn left onto the winding ramp that will take you to Avenue du Rhin. Cross the bridge over the Bassin Vauban and go straight ahead at the next crossroads. At the bottom of the ramp, turn left onto Avenue Aristide Briand.

(25) Atthe second set of traffic lights, turn left onto Rue d'Orbey. Pass a supermarket and continue to the end of Rue d'Orbey.

(26) Just before passing under the railway bridge, turn right into the small Parc du Kurgarten. At the end of the park, you will walk alongside the Ziegelwasser stream on your right before turning left under the railway bridge.

(27) On the other side of the railway line, continue through the park along the cycle path. You will come out onto Avenue du Neuhof. Cross it, turning right and then left to enter Rue de la Kibitzenau.

(28) In front of the swimming pool of the same name, continue on your way, passing behind the Racing Club Alsace training centre. You will come out onto Rue des Vanneaux. Turn left and then immediately right onto Rue des Ciriers until you reach the small footbridge at the end of the street.

(29) Cross the footbridge and you will find yourself back on Rue Staedel, which you took at the start of our walk. Turn right. The Stade de la Meinau, which was our starting point and is now our destination, is within sight (S/E).

Notes

A mountain bike is not essential, but a sturdy all-terrain bike is necessary. Do not attempt this route on a fixed-gear or road bike.

Variation:
(29) One option for finishing is to cross the park rather than going around it via Rue Staedel. To do this, turn right just after the footbridge. At the end of the path, you will arrive at the car park at the foot of the stadium. Turn left to return to your starting point (S/E).

A superb walk for the whole family.
The paths are very easy to access and well marked. There are no difficulties except for two bridges along the route. On the German side, there is a very large building housing a theatre and a restaurant on the banks of the Rhine, which is the perfect place to stop for a break and something to eat halfway through the walk.
Thank you so much for this walk!

A nice little bike ride: the start, which is unavoidable but not very pleasant in the city and with roadworks, is followed by a pleasant forest trail, then after crossing the Rhine the path is stable. The footbridge marked as dangerous is not closed (point 18).

I did hike 2276305, "Cycling along both sides of the Rhine from Strasbourg," and encountered a problem when trying to cross the footbridge in Germany, as it was closed due to safety concerns. A sign in German indicated this. Crossing point no. 18.

Please note that the bridge on the German side is closed for repairs, so you will need to take a detour through the interior, which is quite a long way and in the sun.

This walk was really very good. Except that we started from the Issler garden centre in Vendenheim and joined the route at La Meinau. Beautiful scenery and a very well-marked route. Worth doing again.

A most interesting route for cycling!
Bucolic landscapes along the Rhine, cycle paths through towns and a beautiful sunny day that allowed us to stop at the Jardin des Deux Rives ice cream parlour. What more could you ask for?
We highly recommend this route!
Please note that we chose the Deux Rives car park as our start and finish point, as the Meinau was hosting Racing-Metz at 5pm and its car park and surrounding area were extremely busy!
