Description of the walk

Once you arrive in the village of La Vancelle, park in the car park on Place René Andlauer, near the multi-service centre.

(S/E) From the car park, turn left and walk up Rue du Général de Gaulle to the junction.

Red Ring signposting

(1) Turn right, then immediately left. Go round the school on the right, passing behind the church via a fairly steep path. When you reach the first street, continue straight on until you reach Rue de l’Alternberg.

(2) Turn left and walk to the end of the street. Go round a fenced-off property on the left and continue to the spring catchment and the Route Forestière du Hintereck.

(3) At the junction, turn right and walk along the Route Forestière du Hintereck on fairly flat ground. Pass two junctions to reach a third one with the Route Forestière Himmelsleiter.

(4) Turn left onto a concrete path. Continue along the track to the left and go through the gate. The path climbs slightly until it meets a hiking trail.

Red Disc markings

(5) Continue straight on to the Col du Frankenbourg.

(6) You can stop here at the picnic table, or turn right uphill towards Frankenbourg Castle. Continue uphill to a small junction.

Red Saltire signpost

(7) The path on the right takes you to the remains of the Mur Païen, 60 metres away. Don’t miss this very rare site, which also offers a view of Lièpvre and the Rocher du Coucou. Retrace your steps and continue your climb towards the castle.

(8) After crossing the small esplanade, go through the castle’s outer wall and take in all the views before you: Val de Villé, Scherwiller, Sélestat, Haut-Koenigsbourg! Retrace your steps back to the Col du Frankenbourg.

(6) Continue in the opposite direction to your outward journey, taking the second path on the left. Head to the start of the path on the left.

(5) Take the small path on the left, following the Red Saltire markings. To your left, a clear-cut area offers a view towards the Hahnenberg and the Haut-Koenigsbourg massif. Continue to a fork.

(9) Turn left, following the same markings, to the Gros Hêtre crossroads.

(10) Continue straight on to reach the Heyriseck junction.

Yellow Triangle markings

(11) Turn right and head towards La Vancelle. Walk straight through the forest. Gradually, the vegetation becomes less dense. You will see meadows and arrive in the village. At the houses, continue straight on along Rue des Chalets to the junction with Rue de l’Altenberg.

(12) Continue left along Rue des Chalets to return to the junction you passed on the way there.

(1) Turn left and head towards the car park (S/E).

Worth a visit

During the hike, enjoy the many vantage points offering views of varied and unforgettable landscapes.
On the Hinterck Forest Road, a small, unobstructed viewpoint overlooks the heights of La Vancelle.
At the end of the Himmelsleiter Forest Road, before the Col du Frankenbourg, a stunning viewpoint towards Haut-Koenigsbourg opens up before you.
From the ruins of Frankenbourg, there are numerous panoramic views: the Villé valley, Scherwiller and Sélestat, the Hahnenberg massif and that of Haut-Koenigsbourg, and finally the village of Lièpvre and the Rocher du Coucou.
Before visiting the medieval ruins of Frankenbourg, you will see, near the access path, the remains of the “Mur Païen” (Pagan Wall), stretching for several dozen metres, a structure built from cyclopean blocks assembled using the same technique as the famous Mur Païen on Mont Sainte-Odile.

It’s a shame that access to the castle has been closed for safety reasons since 30 April 2025.
The village of La Vancelle is pretty and pleasant to walk through.
The climb is long, and if we can’t visit the castle...
We had lunch at the Col du Frankenbourg, where there is a shelter in case of bad weather.
In fine weather, there are lovely views of Ortenbourg and Ramstein castles on one side, with the Villé valley.
There is a lovely view of Haut-Koenigsbourg Castle and the Sainte-Marie au Mines valley.
The path we took for the descent is very pretty.
The paths are well maintained. Well done to the Vosges Club!

A very pleasant walk with some lovely views, particularly at the castle, which you reach after a steep climb.
The castle is currently closed to the public for safety reasons.

A lovely little walk.
We did the route in the opposite direction, which avoids the climb that can seem endless along the Himmelsleiter forest road (it’s more pleasant going downhill).
Please note: access to Frankenbourg Castle is PROHIBITED for safety reasons (municipal by-law of the commune of Neubois dated 30 April 2025)

A lovely walk.
Most of the route is through the forest, which is lovely in hot weather, and if you ever do this walk in winter, be aware that you’ll be feeling the heat within two minutes of setting off, as you’re immediately faced with some steep climbs.

A lovely walk. It’s quite difficult to find the car park, as the address of the starting point isn’t recognised by satnavs or even Google Maps.
