Waypoints
- S/E : km 0 - alt. 218 m
- 1 : km 0.04 - alt. 226 m - Walk along the A66 (pavement) towards Scales. Follow the fingerpost on a track to open fell.
- 2 : km 0.27 - alt. 258 m - Take the obvious track that gradually goes up the hillside.
- 3 : km 0.91 - alt. 378 m - Take the obvious track that zig zags up the hillside.
- 4 : km 1.57 - alt. 572 m - Follow the obvious edge side path westwards, over the summit and down the other side.
- 5 : km 6.26 - alt. 429 m - Head towards the roadhead above the Blencathra Centre.
- 6 : km 6.92 - alt. 281 m - There is a permissive path that leads down to the Blencathra Centre. There is the a (vaguely signed) footpath that runs through the buildings, along the hillside back to the road. N.B. There's not much merit in diverting to the Blencathra Centre, it is probably just as well to continue down the road to Threlkeld.
- 7 : km 9.15 - alt. 149 m - Turn off right from the main road through Threlkeld. This leads to a track that gives access to the A66. Cross the road (take care) and follow the single track road to the River Glenderamakin.
- 8 : km 9.68 - alt. 140 m - Follow the track alongside the River Glenderamakin
- 9 : km 11.58 - alt. 149 m - Follow the fingerpost to Scales. There are gates and stiles that allow you to field hop to Scales. There isn't any signage (that I could see) across the fields, but the route is reasonably obvious...just head for the buildings at Scales.
- 10 : km 12.52 - alt. 226 m - Cross the A66 and follow the pavement back to the carpark.
- S/E : km 12.82 - alt. 222 m
Other walks in the area
Blencathra via Sharp Edge from Scales

Sharp Edge is the highlight of this Lake District walk to Blencathra's highest point at Hallsfell Top. Sharp Edge is challenging mountain environment and needs treating with respect. The views from the Top are stunning covering most of the Lake District's highest fells.
Souther Fell
The broad ridge of Souther Fell gives excellent views of Blencathra and more distantly over the Vale of Eden to the North Pennines.
Blencathra
Circular route up to the Saddleback of Blencathra. The route follows some of the easier routes on this iconic fell; the
still-considerable effort is rewarded with dramatic mountain views.
Bowscale & Mosedale
A virtually level farmland and mossland stroll through two pretty Lakeland hamlets with views of Carrock Fell and beyond.
Circular walk to Latrigg summit
Lovely family friendly circular walk passing by Latrigg summit and Brundholme Wood. This is dog friendly walk.
Lonscale Fell
Great walk to Lonscale Pike.
⚠️ Steep ascent between section (1) and (2) that can be challenging.
Carrock Fell
Great walk to Carrock Fell. The path to the summit is very steep but short. A bit of scrambling to reach the summit.
Along Keswick old railway line

Easy circular walk along the Keswick old railway line and back by the bottom of Latrigg summit. Amazing view of Keswick along the way. Dog friendly and pushchair / wheelchair friendly until the waypoint (1).
