Description

Start the plot by indicating the starting point. If you know the exact car parking situation, please explain how to park.
If we can access the starting point with public transports, please explain the lines to use and share any useful informations.

(S) From here, describe the instructions to follow from the starting point.

Add waypoints by clicking on the map.

The plot has to end by the location where the walk finishes. If it is a loop please write (S/E) at the end of the description. If it is a one way route write (E).

Waypoints

  1. S : km 0 - alt. 109 m
  2. 1 : km 0.04 - alt. 101 m - Head eastwards down the road and turn off right on a farm track towards the River Esk. A signed footpath then leads up the valley alongside the River Esk. An obvious track then leads across fields to open fell. Eventually the track leads to the Lingcove packhorse bridge.
  3. 2 : km 3.18 - alt. 200 m - Cross Lingcove bridge and then take the right branch of a track northwards. This leads up to the east side of Throstlehow Crag. Trackless fell to the summit of the crag.
  4. 3 : km 4.37 - alt. 389 m - Head north-eastwards from Throstlehow Crag to the col with Long Scar. Follow a vague track uphill (still north-eastwards) and around to approach Pianet Knott from the north.
  5. 4 : km 5.27 - alt. 416 m - Head north-westwards on trackless fell over Long Scar. Drop down the other side and approach Scar Lathing from the north.
  6. 5 : km 6.58 - alt. 421 m - Over trackless fell, head to the east side of the obvious Low Gait Crags. Climb upwards alongside the crags and pick up a vague track that leads around to High Gait Crags. You may need a gps to pick out the official summit (it does have a cairn on it).
  7. 6 : km 7.73 - alt. 560 m - Follow a vague track across Pike De Bield Moss and climb the southern end of Yeastyrigg Crags (reasonably easy climb). The summit of Yeastyrigg Crag is not obvious and you may need the gps to determine the official summit.
  8. 7 : km 8.85 - alt. 754 m - Follow a vague track northwards up into the higher crags. Pike de Bield crag is the one that is further west. You may need a gps to determine the correct summit.
  9. 8 : km 9.1 - alt. 800 m - Over trackless fell, contour along the hillside until reaching the obvious track between Esk Pike and Ore Gap. Follow the track down to Ore Gap.
  10. 9 : km 9.7 - alt. 759 m - Follow a track southwards to Yeastyrigg Gill. The track is a little sketchy at times, but the direction of the route is obvious (with the gill on the right).
  11. 10 : km 11.32 - alt. 414 m - Follow an obvious track southwards down the valley. Lingcove Beck runs alongside (on the right).
  12. 11 : km 12.73 - alt. 359 m - Head off on an obvious track and turn right towards Yew Bank.
  13. 12 : km 13.96 - alt. 478 m - Head over trackless fell to the summit of Yew Bank. You may need your gps to find the official summit.
  14. 13 : km 14.26 - alt. 481 m - Head over trackless fell to Hard Knott tarns.
  15. 14 : km 14.45 - alt. 470 m - Head back on to the previous track and head southwards to the summit of Hard Knott. There is a large cairn on top. Even so, you may need your gps to confirm the summit.
  16. 15 : km 15.16 - alt. 537 m - The route between Hard Knotts summit and the road at the top of Hard Knott pass is a confusing area of crags, peaks and cloughs with many tracks crossing the area. It may be easier to use your gps to find the exact locations of the other summits and Raven Tarn, before descending to the road.
  17. 16 : km 16.51 - alt. 392 m - Follow the road westwards.
  18. 17 : km 17.02 - alt. 332 m - Leave the road on a signed footpath. This leads over to the Roman fort and then back to the road.
  19. E : km 18.67 - alt. 128 m
