The return makes use of another dale, a stretch of Roman road, and an old drove way.

This is good for a short winter day or a longer day if you want to explore the ruins of the castle and then walk over to Rievaulx Abbey and explore it too. There is a good cafe at Rievaulx Abbey and a good selection of shops in Helmsley.
