Dinkley Bridge over Ribble

Description

Start : Start in Barker Brow car park on B6245 just south of the bridge over River Ribble Ribchester.

(S/E) From Barker Brow car park head right (South) from the car park along the main road (B6245).

(1) Leave Ribchester Road by heading left (East) via the farm gate across the field towards the wood. Use the stile to enter the wood and carefully make your way down over the stream and up the bank on the East side.

When you reach the fence junction head straight (East) on the path up the ridge to track Lower Cadshaw. Take the gate onto the track and head (left) North on the West side of Lower Cadshaw before turning right (East) along the left (North) side of the property.

(2) At the junction, follow the footpath left (North) along the hedge boundary to the gate in the hedge. Continue on the path to a stile over the wire fence. Continue on the footpath which passes over Roman Road to the stile in a fence. Take the path around the North side of the buildings (right and left) to the main road (B6245).

(3) Turn slightly right and left to cross Ribchester bridge. At the end of the bridge, (North side of the bridge), take track right (East) along the North bank of the river. You now have the river on your right-hand side. Follow the footpath briefly North-East to the river bank then at the junction, right (East) under the woods along the river bank.

(4) Cross the footbridge into Haugh Wood and follow the path as it bends right (South-East) following the river. Exit Haugh Wood and head left (Northeast) upslope towards the field gateway. Pass North through the gate and make your way towards the hedge line on the West side of the field. Take stile by a gate and follow hedge Northeast to a farm track.

(5) Take the farm track briefly right (South) past the farm to a footpath heading left (East) across the field. Cross a footbridge to continue right (East) along the North side of the hedge along Ribble Way. Take stile and continue straight (East) along the North side of the hedge. Briefly head East along the track to the footpath on the South side of the track.

(6) At the junction, take the footpath right (South) down the incline to Dinckley suspension bridge over the river. Cross the suspension bridge and take the footpath right (West) along the South bank of the river. You now have the river on your right-hand side. Pass through the gate and continue on the footpath along the river bank. You eventually reach Marles Wood.

(7) Take stile into Marles Wood and follow the path on the right (Northern boundary) then left out of the woods to the car park. Exit the car park onto Ribchester Road.

(8) Briefly head right (West) along the road and take the footpath on your left (the south of the road). Take a stile left (South) and follow a footpath South along the west side of Park Wood. Cross a stile and head South-West to the corner of the field. Use a stile to continue straight South to lily ponds at the right (South-West) corner of the field. Cross a stile beside the gate and follow the footpath South-West along the North side of the field boundary.

(9) At the junction, head right (North-West) on a path parallel to Bradley Coppice to the West. Head North down centre of the field to the Northern boundary.

(10) Cross the footbridge and when you get to the junction you took before, go straight to retrace the route back to the bridge over River Ribble at B6245. At the bridge, head left (South) along the main road. Take the gate off the main road and follow the footpath back to the car park.(S/E)

Hi Cazza T,

Thank you for this feedback. I just reported the overgrown path at the Lancashire council here https://www.lancashire.gov.uk/roads-park...

Thank you gfl57 to have shared the link with me. For the direction, yes we limit the number of waypoints so if you wish to print the route from a PDF file you will be able to read it. If the description is detailed enough it should not be a problem. That's great you share the think to your personal website so people have the choice to follow either trace/plot.

Have a great day.

Glad you managed to find a way to complete the walk.

The 'Useful Info' section of the walk contains the following link

which describes the route in more detail than is possible on Visorando
and includes relevant images together with left/right type directions
in addition to compass style directions.

http://www.graemelinford.com/walks

contains a number of walks you might want to investigate.

Unfortunately we had to abort the start of the walk and retrace our steps before rejoining the walk at the Ribchester bridge because the fields and paths were overgrown and we couldn’t find the planned route. The rest of the walk was enjoyable though.
It might be clearer if the directions said ‘turn left’ or ‘right’ through a the field to a stile on say ‘the top left hand corner of the field’ rather than north or west.

Glad you enjoyed the walk. Visorando limits the number of waypoints you can use to describe a walk. Fortunately the original more detailed version of the walk is available at www.graemelinford.com/walks together with other walks in the area which you may like to investigate.

Lovely walk along the river with interesting crossings over the river. Wet and slippy under foot but the sun did come out. Written description was brief and therefore needed to rely on the in mobile app to ensure going the right way. There were opportunities to use objects on the route to aid directions.

Having walked the Tolkien trail in this area several times this Dinkley circular made an interesting change.
I led it for my walking group who enjoyed it in spite of the mud through the woods. We met very few people on the walk.
