Description of the walk

Start : Foxfields Country Hotel, Whalley Road, Billington, (BB7 9HY) Grid ref. SD 715 350

(S/E) From Foxfields Country Hotel walk down to the road and turn left, walking along the front of Artisan Restaurant. Turn left (South) up the public footpath passing through farm buildings and up and over the railway bridge, then taking the stile to your right.

Walk across the bottom of the field, keeping the fence on the right, heading for the Oak tree near the corner. Over the stile and bear left up to the top of the field, and across the next stile. Enter the next field (ignore the stile to your right) and follow the hedge on your right to the top of the field.

(1) Go through the gate/stile and bear immediately left walking behind the farm and along a farm track to the road (Whalley Old Road). From here you will see a footpath on the other side of the road. Cross the stile and follow the path straight up the hill. Continue over a small wall and up the bank to the gate at the top.

Cross the road (Moor Lane) and follow the track through the forest to the top of the hill, and on the other side when the path forks, take the left fork and continue down the hill to the stile.

(2) Cross into the field, walking over to the stone slab stile to the right. Keeping the fence to your left walk across the field passing a stile and stile with a bridge as you continue across. Continue until you pass a house, and then wood, on your left. Here the path meanders through gorse bushes, take care these are great for wildlife but also prickly! You will eventually reach a wall running up the hill to your right, pass it.

(3) Turn right and walk straight up the hill (North-West) with the wall to your right, to reach a ladder stile at the top of the hill. Continue straight on across heading towards the left-hand side of the old barn, passing or crossing stiles on your left as you walk.

(4) Cross the lane and continue straight across the next field over the stile and into the wood. Follow the meandering path to your left, maybe pausing a while to enjoy the view from the bench. When the winding path reaches the road, bear right (ignoring the footpath to your left) and walk along the road until you reach a footpath and stile on your left.

(5) Walk down the hill with the hedge on your left, to reach a stile and gate at which point you may realise we are retracing your early steps at the waypoint (1). Continue down to the next stile after which you bear right and continue downhill keeping the fence to your right. Over the stile at the bottom corner, across the bottom of the field, and through the gate. Bear left over the bridge and down the hill to the road, where you bear right and find yourself back at Foxfields Country Hotel. (S/E)
