Start & Parking : Derby Arms Car Park. Chipping Rd, Longridge, Preston. Grid ref. SD 606 392
(S/E) From the entrance of the Derby Arms cross the road in front of the pub, watching carefully for oncoming traffic from both directions. Walk left, along the road to continue into the entrance of Little Town Dairy and Farm shop.
Walk up the drive towards the farm, passing the car park, farm shop and café over to your left. Continue up the track, passing farm buildings, and bearing left as you reach the farmhouse. Then immediately right, passing another barn on your left. Continue onto a farm track and through a gate, following the track in a straight line until it finally bends to the left, at which point you leave it through a kissing gate on your right.
(1) Walk diagonally (South) across the field to the corner where you will pass an ancient stone stile, to continue along the edge of the next field, keeping the hedge and fence to your left. At the end of this field, you go through a gate and onto a lane at Old Rhodes.
Here you bear right along the lane passing the entrance to Jenkinson’s farm on your left, still keeping right. Continue along the lane, through the next gate, beside a cattle grid, and onto the next kissing gate beside another cattle grid.
(2) At the T-junction of tracks turn left passing some farm buildings on your right and continue straight on bearing left when the track forks, passing through a gateway keeping the next property to your right. Continue straight on through a gate and up the hill in an old sunken lane, which where overgrown, means walking along the field edge keeping the boundary to your left.
Continue to the very top of the hill from where, on a clear day, the views over Bowland and the Fylde Coast can be outstanding. Cross the next stile at the very top along to reach the road.
(3) Turn left and continue until the hedge finishes and the dry-stone wall begins. Here you will find a stile, cross this and into the field, following the path diagonally to your right until you will find a very old stone step stile. Crossing this to continue along the next field edge keeping the wall to your left until you reach the next stile and then another, following a track for a short distance and along another field edge when you reach the far corner, across another stone step stile.
Follow a track along a wall across the driveway and then follow the fence on your left till you get to a stone style, continue through this and through an overgrown garden to cross a stile on the other side. Continue straight across the next field to the right-hand side of the house ahead of you to reach the lane.
(4) Join this lane and walk left (North), downhill passing an old well on your right, opposite the house and then down the hill where you pass an old mounting block to your left, used in days gone by to help you get on your horse! Soon after the mounting block you will see a stile on your left, beside a track.
(5) Follow this track to a farm, bearing right through the lower farmyard and then joining the track down the hill to your right. Continue straight on until a gate and stile after which you will bear left across the field keeping the hedge on your left until you reach the farm track you walked up at the start of this walk. Turn right down this track passing Little Town farm again, and continue to the road, where you turn left and back along to return to the Derby Arms, making sure you cross the road safely. (S/E)
