Start/Finish: Start of the walk at Wolkenstein market, in the town hall tunnel
(S/E) Initially following the red-marked European Long-Distance Trail Eisenach–Budapest and the Zschopautalweg down into the valley, walkers turn right just before reaching the valley floor into the rocky labyrinth of Wolkenstein Switzerland, continuing along the European Long-Distance Trail.
(1) The route heads uphill via the Brückenklippe viewing platform (2) and turns sharply left at the edge of the forest.
The terrain continues to climb until you reach the Anton-Günther-Höhe (3), a plateau with benches and a shelter. After that, it descends again towards Warmbad; to do this, walk back along the same path for a short distance and then turn left. Continue walking further into the valley and eventually cross the road to enter the spa gardens via the EB trail.
(4) After the spa gardens in Heilbad Warmbad, walkers switch to the yellow markings.
To the left of the Warmbad bus stop, at Am Kurpark, the path leads back into the countryside.
Continue to follow the yellow markings and take in the information on the history of mining, whilst spoil heaps from the mining era can be seen repeatedly along the way.
After crossing the B101, the dirt track leads up to a vantage point until it meets the blue-marked E3 – keep to the right.
(5) At the junction of the EB and E3, keep left to follow the E3.
After crossing the B171, the route continues straight ahead (first following the yellow markings, then turning left at the Kohlau farmstead to follow the green markings).
(6) At the Zeisigstein viewpoint, keep right to walk downhill through the forest to the Zschopau Valley hiking trail.
Continue to keep right and, after crossing the Eschenbach stream, switch back to the yellow markings.
Through the Wolfsschlucht gorge, head right up to the old town of Wolkenstein.
At the end of the walk, it’s well worth visiting Wolkenstein Castle. (S/E)
