Description of the walk

In Valleraugue, park in the hikers' car park on the west side of the village, near the Maison de Pays.

No signposts

(S/E) Head towards the Maison de Pays, then follow the main street to the right. Shortly afterwards, turn left under a house to take the Pont de la Confrérie bridge over the Hérault river. At the T-junction, turn right.

(1) Take the first alley on the left. At the intersection with the Rue du Parterre sign, take the alley on the left. Turn right at the hairpin bend on the next alley and ignore the first steps of the 4,000-step path on the left (you can climb a few steps for a view of the village). Continue straight ahead, downhill, past the signs for Rue du Pouzet and Rue du Serre. At the T-junction, follow the lane on the left and you will come to a wider street (Rue Pied du Pré), opposite the temple.

(2) Turn right until the next crossroads, signposted Valleraugue Église. Walk a few metres to the right on the church square (François Perrier monument), retrace your steps and take the street opposite, slightly to the left (Rue Neuve) to reach a bridge over the Clarou.

(3) Cross the bridge, find the Valleraugue le Ciel signpost, and continue towards Figayrole on Rue du Barry de la Macédoine. At the end of the street, continue along the path (Chemin de Combes Chaudes) and pass below the well-maintained terraces.

(4) Further on, the path becomes a trail. Pass below old abandoned terraces that have been colonised by the forest. At a fork in the trail, near a bench, continue to the right to descend and join a road. Follow it to the right until you reach the bridge over the Hérault and the old Moulin de la Bessède mill.

(5) Return along the same route you came, to the bridge over the Clarou in the village of Valleraugue.

(3) After crossing the bridge, turn left, walk past the temple on your right, then turn right onto Promenade des Marronniers. Cross the street and continue along the promenade opposite. You will arrive in front of the war memorial, which is located in front of a fresco (in need of restoration) depicting silk spinners. Enter the small square on the right, then immediately take the alley on the left, then the alley on the right. Join a street on the left, passing in front of the town hall, then you will come to an intersection with an alley on the right, which you already passed on the way there.

(1) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction: continue straight ahead for about 50 metres, turn left onto the Pont de la Confrérie and you will come to the main street opposite the car park (S/E).

Information about Valleraugue here

In the steep-sided valleys of the Cévennes, terraces were used to cultivate vegetable gardens. Many are no longer maintained, but fortunately some still are, particularly for growing sweet onions, a regional speciality.

Enjoy a pleasant stroll through narrow streets suitable for carts.
The hiker car park is located about 200 metres beyond the country house (water tap for motorhomes and petrol pumps).
