Towards the south coast of the Île de Groix

Let’s cross part of Groix to explore the wild coast and the Trou de l’Enfer, a fault where the sea rushes in.
Let’s enjoy the tranquillity of the little port of Saint-Nicolas and continue on to Locmaria and its nature reserve.
Let’s return to the village via a sheltered valley that hides a small pond.
Let’s finish with a visit to the Chapel of the Trinity and its stained-glass window honouring the sailors of Groix at Sainte-Anne

Description of the walk

(S/E) With your back to the church, follow Rue du Presbytère, which continues into Rue Maurice Gourong, where the Groix Nature Reserve Centre is located (free entry). Pass the wash house and the fountain near the large car park (Groix has a significant number of these). Continue along this road, past the DIY store, and after the sign for the menhir (marking on the ground), look for a path on the left (signposted ‘Saint-Nicolas’ on a sign partially hidden in a hedge).

(1) Turn left and follow this path straight ahead through the meadows. On your right, you will see the ruins of the Kerbus Windmill (this is the only remaining windmill of the seven known to have existed on the island in the 19th century). Cross the road and continue straight ahead.

(2) Take a path on the right that goes round the hamlet of Quéhello. At the road, turn right and continue until you reach the end of the hamlet.

(3) Take the path branching off to the right, ignoring the small road leading to the car park above Port Saint-Nicolas.
Head down into the valley, pass a rock topped with a small cross and reach the beach with its rock known as Rocher de la Vache (a pleasant spot for a break).

(4) Retrace your steps, turn right onto the wide path leading down from the car park (a steep climb) then veer right onto the coastal path, which you will now follow to the beach and the port of Locmaria. This section of the route, which overlooks the sea, is very tricky for those prone to vertigo. Please stay within the marked areas to help the sea grass regrow. Follow the path, which initially heads south-east, to reach the Trou de l'Enfer, a large fissure in the cliff where the sea crashes violently.

(5) Continue past the Pointe de l'Enfer. The path alternates between descents and ascents as it heads east. Pass several small coves, such as the Baie des Curés and its small beach. Reach the François Le Bail Nature Reserve, where the path turns north-east to run alongside Locmaria beach.

(6) At the road, leave the coast and follow the path that heads into the valley. Walk past a small pond, passing the Fontaine Saint-Armand (not Saint-Amand as shown on the map). Turn left at the road and head towards Kermouzouët.

(7) Take the path on the right, continue straight on and walk past an adventure park and unique accommodation on your left before reaching a road.

(8) Turn left and continue to the crossroads where the Chapelle la Trinité is located; inside, you can see a stained-glass window commemorating the sailors of Groix at Sainte-Anne.

(9) Turn right and continue straight on along Rue Marie Le Fur and Rue François le Bail, which lead to the square in front of the church (S/E).

Notes

Ferry service: Lorient–Groix in 45 minutes
One-way fare in June 2016: €14 per person.
Port Tudy to Le Bourg, Monday to Saturday (Sundays in September and June).
The Tudybus T2 runs daily, with a bus departing approximately 10 minutes after each boat arrival.

Bars at the port of departure and shops in the village.

Signposting is very sporadic: a few yellow markings and directions on stone markers on the ground or white markings on the road (mainly for cyclists).

Pick up a free map of the island from the tourist office in Port-Tudy – it’s very useful for finding your way around.

Worth a visit

A superb route for the views. Between points 4 and 5, I think we followed the route correctly. There’s a rather ‘tricky’ section overlooking the sea for those prone to vertigo. We would have liked to have seen this better highlighted in the description and perhaps had an alternative route suggested. Fortunately, the weather was dry and lovely!

On our first day on the island, having settled in that morning in the village of Groix, we went on this walk in the afternoon. It was a great way to get to know the area, and the view as we reached Port St Nicolas on the south-east coast is spectacular.
