Vallée de la Course and the lost valleys

A very pretty tour around the villages of Beussent, Montcavrel and Enquin-sur-Baillon. Very varied landscapes with small roads and farm tracks. An easy but challenging hike. You will have the chance to see different aspects of the Course valley, with its cress farms still in operation. Pleasant picnic stop in Enquin sur Baillon (shaded table) or Beussent, near the river. The departure point is Enquinehaut because the descent to the Course is splendid. You will see pretty lost valleys.

Description of the route

Departure from the hamlet of Enquinehaut. No car park, but parking is available along the road that climbs from Bernieulles to Enquinehaut.

(S/E) Start off on a slight incline and, at the three-way junction, turn right and quickly reach the next crossroads.

(1) Take the small road on the right (signposted Lodge) and, after a slight climb, descend all the way to the end of Route des Hayes in Zérables and enjoy the magnificent scenery.

(2) Turn right, continue for 20 m, then take the first left onto Rue du Pont Neuf. Cross the bridge over the Rivière Course and continue to the end of the street. Turn right and you will come to a large intersection with a central reservation.

(3) Follow the road that climbs to the left, Rue du Ménage, until the next intersection.

(4) Continue right, pass the Manoir de la Haute Chambre de Bessant, and descend to the Montcavrel Town Hall and the D151, after the bridge.

(5) Take the road on the left towards Alette, then at the three-way junction with a cross, take the road on the right and go up towards the Château de Montcavrel.

(6) At the fork, at the edge of the woods, turn left and follow the small road to the church and cemetery of Alette.

(7) Just before, turn right, go around the building on your left, then continue straight ahead and follow the almost flat path that becomes grassy. After a short descent, take the rural path on the right and continue for about 100 metres until the next fork.

(8) Take the path on the left, surrounded by hedges, which has been re-routed and re-surfaced. At the end of this path, go back down to the departmental road.

(9) Turn right, then left and enter Toutendhal, Route d'Hucqueliers. At No. 3, turn right, pass the farm entrance and continue straight ahead. After a very long grassy climb, you will come to a crossroads with a telecommunications pylon.

(10) Take the descent on the left and join a paved road.

(11) Continue left, then quickly climb right onto Route du Moulin. At the three-way junction, keep right and continue uphill. The macadam road becomes a farm track. At the next junction, go straight ahead and you will come to a road.

(12) Turn right, then quickly take the first path on the left and continue to the next fork (very nice view).

(13) Take the farm track that descends to the right. Continue along the tarmac road until you reach a crossroads. Turn left and, at the four-way intersection, turn right and you will soon reach a rest area with picnic tables on the right.

(14) Return to the previous junction and turn right. Pass the village hall and a few watercress beds that are still in use. Continue straight ahead until the next junction.

(15) Turn left onto the country lane and continue straight ahead until you rejoin the road you were on before. Follow it to the right until you reach a crossroads with a central reservation.

(3) Turn left and head towards Beussent and its mill (small restaurant and picnic table).

(16) Turn right onto the D127; keep right at the next intersection and continue until you reach a three-way junction.

(17) Go uphill to the left onto Route d'Enguinehaut and continue to the hamlet of Enquinehaut (S/E).
