Description of the walk

To reach the starting point, take the small road leading up to Salvaris, either from Rochetaillée or from Saint-Chamond. Just before Salvaris, there is a car park on the left (watch out for ruts).

(S/E) Take the path leading uphill from the car park.

(1) Keep the pylons on your right, ignore a path on your left and continue climbing a little further, along a path that quickly turns left and becomes fairly flat. Continue until you reach a sharp bend.

(2) Take a sharp left-hand bend onto the path which descends quite steeply (the path is made of large stones, so it’s best to wear sturdy shoes). During the descent, there are several viewpoints accessible on the right
Reach the Roche de la Rivoire and enjoy its superb view of the Pilat mountains and the Valla en Gier valley below (be careful of the sheer drop! There is no barrier).

(3) Then continue down the path; the forest eventually opens out, leading to a telecoms mast.

(4) Turn sharply left towards the hamlet of Péalussin, cross the hamlet and head uphill to the left.

(5) At the junction with a forest track, continue straight on along the path which continues to climb and turns left a little further up; continue climbing.

(6) As you approach the summit, turn right; pass the summit and descend for about a hundred metres.

(7) At this point (low point), you will see a parallel path a few metres to the right; turn left onto this parallel path, then immediately turn right onto a steeply descending track (caution: slippery rocks). Continue the descent to the forest road and turn left onto the road, which will take you slightly uphill back to the starting point (S/E).

I really enjoyed this hike. It’s very pleasant. Not too difficult. The climbs are good for getting used to tougher challenges and for starting the new season at a gentle pace.

We are elderly and don’t have smartphones. Under these circumstances, it was very difficult to find the route. In fact, at point 2, it isn’t clear that you should take the first hairpin bend, as it isn’t steep and is stony right from the start. We therefore ended up at Le Muret, where a park sign sent us back the way we came. The rocky path at La Ravoire is really difficult and very long. And the section mentioned as being slippery on the way back is genuinely dangerous. I think it would be possible to return via a more suitable path.
The view of La Valla en Gier is the only highlight of the route.
We were nevertheless happy with our day out in the fresh air.

It should be noted, however, that the paths are extremely stony and often very steep on the downhill sections: between sections 2 and 4, and 6 and 7.
It is a route entirely through the forest, with views only between 1 and 3.
It’s true that the elevation gain isn’t huge (350m) but over just 6.6km.
For these reasons, I found this hike quite challenging!!!

Hello, The walk, which is very close to the city (less than 20 km from Saint-Étienne), offers a real change of scenery – it’s even quite wild – and that’s a real plus. However, the description is rather vague, and as there are no signposts...What’s more, extensive tree felling has altered the landscape and sometimes makes the path difficult to follow. The storm has also knocked quite a few trees across the path, but we managed to get through...
Thank you for allowing us to discover such a beautiful spot so close to the city.

A really great time, with some truly stunning views – particularly from the Roches de la Rivoire – a friendly encounter with some hunters, a lovely sighting of two roe deer, and we almost came across the much-sought-after wild boar!
A steep climb after Pealussin takes us up to a pine-covered ridge where the autumn light was filtering through beautifully; be careful not to miss the small path running parallel to it in the hollow! A pleasant, gentle descent back to the start along a stretch of forest track; in short, perfect, thanks to the detailed description, thank you!!:
