A Gallic bridge in the Somail Forest

A superb, shaded hike in the Monts du Somail, which is very pleasant in summer to enjoy the coolness of this beautiful forest. It does not present any particular difficulties. The trail is dotted with a few items of cultural heritage. The Moulin de Mathas, now in ruins, where you can still admire a superb water reservoir, made of stone, which was used to supply the mill. Further on, the Pont Gaulois (Gallic Bridge) next to a pretty waterfall.

Description of the walk

The hike starts at the Col des Thérondels, on the departmental road 55 between Saint-Pons de Thomières and Anglès. You can park on either side of the road. The hike will be done in a counterclockwise direction.

(S/E) Take the forest track heading west and follow it for about 500 m until you reach a junction with a path.

(1) Turn right onto the path (azimuth 256°). After about 100 metres, at the three-way junction, turn left until you reach a crossroads.

(2) Turn left and, after about 100 metres, turn left again. Continue for about 250 metres until you reach a crossroads.

(3) Turn right, heading due west, and continue straight ahead on this road until you reach a forest track (about 950 m).

(4) Turn right and follow the track for about 650 m. At the end of a large bend, you will reach an intersection with a road.

(5) Turn right onto the road (azimuth 260°) and continue along it for 300 m. At the crossroads, turn right (azimuth 300°) and continue for 600 m until you reach a forest track.

(6) Continue straight ahead and, after 250 m, go straight ahead at the intersection with Chemin du Briol. Continue for about 450 m until you reach an intersection with a path that leads into the woods.

(7) Take the path through the woods that descends east-southeast for about 750 m.

(8) Ignore the hairpin bend to the left and go straight ahead (azimuth 311°). The path is not obvious at first, but it soon becomes clearly marked. Follow it to a crossroads.

(9) Take the path on the left (azimuth 47°). Cross a stream and continue to an intersection about 350 m further on.

(10) Take the road on the right (azimuth 167°). Cross the stream and, at the intersection about 50 metres further on, continue straight ahead until you reach another road.

(11) Turn right, heading south-west, cross a stream and continue until you reach the forest track at Mathas.

(12) Turn left onto the PR®, heading south-southeast, and follow it to the Col du Moulin.

(13) At the Col du Moulin, continue on the PR® trail, heading northeast. After 750 m, turn right onto the PR® trail and continue to the intersection 180 m ahead.

(14) Leave the PR® and turn right onto the path that descends. After 230 m, ignore the path that heads south. Continue along the path for about 200 m until you reach a crossroads. Continue straight ahead, almost due east, along the path until you reach the junction with a PR®.

(15) Turn left onto the path heading north. The path climbs before descending towards the Pont Gaulois.

(16) Pont Gaulois and the Ruisseau de la Salesse waterfall. Continue along the path which climbs up to a junction.

(17) Take the path that descends to the right. Please note: this path is not marked on the map, but it does exist and is passable. Join the PR® at a place called Les Couts. Ignore the path that heads south and continue straight ahead. Pass the Ruisseau de la Claou and continue for about 600 m to reach a PR® intersection.

(18) Turn left onto the path heading north and continue to the forest track (Route de la Corniche). Turn right and follow the track to an intersection with another track.

(19) Stay on the Route Forestière de la Corniche until you reach the D55 departmental road.

(20) Cross the road and take the small track that climbs uphill (do not cross the stream). This area has been subject to forestry work, but it is possible to make out the path. Follow it to the top until you reach a forest track. On the last section, the terrain has been altered by construction machinery, but it is possible to navigate easily to reach the forest track.

(21) Turn left onto the forest track, heading north, until you reach an intersection with another forest track.

(22) Turn left, heading north-west, and continue to the Col des Thérondels (S/E).

Notes

At point (17): the path on the right is not marked on the maps but does exist.

Between (20) and (21): forestry work has somewhat obscured the path, but it is easy to find. However, it can be easily found by following the GPS track.

Worth a visit

Between (12) and (13): the Moulin du Mathas.

(16): the Gaulish bridge and waterfall.

Saint-Pons-de-Thomières (10 km): Saint Pons Cathedral and its museum, the Prehistory Museum, the source of the Jaur River and the old streets.

Couroucou (17 km): the glass spinner's cave, the only cave in the Haut Languedoc Regional Nature Park.

A lovely short hike with some beautiful spots. I was able to eat by the stream with my feet in the water between points 11 and 12 (about a 2-hour walk for me) when crossing the bridge
A GPS tracker is essential to follow the route, which is a bit difficult to follow in places due to fallen trees and vegetation

However, be careful as there are quite a few paths reserved for authorised users and I think some private paths and private forests a little further from point 6. There is a property with lots of dogs running free which came and growled (I had my dog with me)

Hello, I did this hike in cool weather (11°C at the start around 8 a.m. and 17°C at the finish around 12:15 p.m.), so be sure to bring warm clothes just in case. This is a pleasant hike if you like walking in the woods and fairly wide trails (although there are some nice single-track trails in the second half of the circuit). The end of the forest road along the cliff is a bit monotonous. I modified the route slightly by descending to the charming hamlet of Bapech after the Col du Moulin. In summary, a pleasant hike with no difficulty but requiring a GPS to follow the route. Also, in the first third of the circuit, there are numerous signs saying "Private property - For your safety, access reserved for authorised persons only". Does this apply to the woods and/or the trails? Thanks to the author.
