Trescléoux - Serres

A grand finale for this revisited Tour des Baronnies. Along the ridges of Aumage and Eyglière, the peaks of Dévoluy and Écrins have never seemed so close. The Buëch Valley stretches out below us, and the 360° views allow us to retrace the path we have travelled over the last seven days: Serre de la Bouisse, Chamouse, Chabre and other peaks emerge on the horizon, bringing back fond memories.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The Tour of the Baronnies Provençales

Description of the walk

(S) Depart from the Mont-Garde lodge. Follow the road west towards Trescléoux, following the red and white markings of the GR® 946. Reach the Blaisance bridge.
Note: these markings will be present until the D994, after Montclus.

(1) Follow the road towards Trescléoux and Montclus. Cross the village and climb up to the Crêtes d'Aumage. Enjoy the panoramic views of Trescléoux and the beautiful Blaisance Valley during this climb.

(2) Continue to follow the signs to Montclus on the left, walking mostly between earth and sky. Reach the Rocher de Beaumont.

(3) Follow the GR® markings carefully here to go around the antennas to the west. Begin the long descent towards Montclus. Enjoy one of the most beautiful ridges in the Baronnies on this route, with its breathtaking views of the Buëch Valley, the Alpine peaks and the small town of Serres.
You will reach a crossroads with several directions.

(4) Leave the ridge here and descend the hairpin bend on the left. Join the Torrent de la Combe valley.

(5) Turn right at a 180° angle, follow the stream, pass the hamlet of Isnard and then arrive at Montclus. The GR® 946 leads to the small village of Montclus.

(6) Turn right to cross it, then continue on the D994 to reach the crossroads at the end of the GR®.

(7) Keep to the right and, continuing with caution, follow the D994 to reach Serres. Once you reach the D994, you have no choice but to follow it to the Chauvins district.

(8) Turn left to leave the D994, then rejoin it to reach the Serres car park, used at the start of this Tour des Baronnies. (E)

Notes

Hiking in the Baronnies Provençales Regional Nature Park is best undertaken in April-May-June and September-October. In summer, it can be very hot in the Baronnies Provençales, and in winter, some paths may be impassable or snow-covered.

Set off each day with a good supply of water, as most of the fountains are not checked and some may have a very low flow rate in all seasons.

(4) Unfortunately, the logical descent route to Serres has been cut off by a recalcitrant landowner. This is why you have to descend to Montclus and follow the departmental road to complete the route.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

Watch out – I came across five Patou dogs that surrounded me, barking a bit, just before I reached the Aumage ridges. Two of them came back a few minutes later and crossed the path. Despite my fear of dogs, I spoke to them calmly, and they finally left me alone.
This ridge walk is truly beautiful.
For the very last section, I didn’t follow the GR route and its long detour towards Montclud, but took the most direct path which branches off to the right—a bit steep at first, then easier—leading straight to Serres.
It isn’t signposted, just old GR markings that have faded away.
