Description of the walk

In Picherande, park in the car park in front of the town hall/post office/tourist office/library.

Mountain bike trail no. 11

(S/E) Return to the road crossing the village and, opposite the church, turn left then right onto the street towards Rochon la Taillade. Ignore the two access roads to the D203 on the left, eventually reaching this road and immediately following a path on the right. Arrive at the hamlet of La Beaubie (information sign about snakes).

(1) Follow the road straight ahead to cross the hamlet, then, at a bend in the road to the right, take a path on the left that goes around the farm buildings and turns into a trail further on. Cross the Neuffonds stream over a bridge made of large stone slabs. You will come to a T-junction with a path at the Trevezin marker.

No markings, directional markers

(2) Leave the mountain bike signposts and follow the Ravel Haut direction on the left. Ignore a path on the right at a house and continue straight ahead on the small road. Cross a bridge over the Ruisseau de Neuffonds and, at the craft brewery, turn left and arrive on the D203, below the Pic de Ravel, a basalt peak topped by a small castle.

(3) Go a few metres to the left, then cross carefully to follow the street towards Ravel Haut and the Ferme de Ravel. When you reach the farm, turn left towards the small red cross to find the Ravel Haut signpost. Follow the signs for La Devèze. You will find the mountain bike trail markers and red and whiteGR®® trail markers.

Mountain bike signpost no. 11 + red and whiteGR®® signpost

Shortly afterwards, turn right towards La Blatte. You will come to a T-junction with a path.

No markings

(4) Leave the markings and turn right towards a sign with a volcano logo and another sign indicating La tourbière. Further on, make a short detour to the right on a path marked with the volcano logo until you reach an information panel about trees (the path continues but leads straight back to Picherande, so do not follow it). Retrace your steps and continue to the right (a sign indicates Tour ERF). You will arrive at the Gayme Bog site, where you will see a sign saying "Recette pour une tourbière" (Recipe for a bog).

Trail markers

(5) Continue straight ahead on the trail. You will arrive at several information signs telling the story of the bog. You can take a few short detours to explore the site a little, but be careful not to stray from the marked paths as it is very easy to get stuck in a "mud hole". In particular, take the path leading to the pond to find another information panel. Then continue along the Bog Trail, which heads west. Shortly afterwards, you will find an information panel entitled "New inhabitants". Further on, turn right, ignoring the path that continues straight ahead, then immediately ignore a path on the left. You will come to an intersection at the Tourbière du Bois de Gayme signpost.

No signposts

(6) For a round trip in the forest, turn right towards Escudor. Follow the wide forest path until you leave the forest to discover the Escudor mountain pastures at the foot of the Monts Dore. A pleasant place to take a break.

(7) Return to the intersection at the Tourbière du Bois de Gayme signpost.

(6) Turn right towards La Blatte.

(8) At the next intersection, take a sharp right onto a grassy path and you will immediately see an information sign on the left for "L'or blanc" (white gold). Further on, you will see a sign for "Nectar de la prairie" (meadow nectar). At the intersection of paths, ignore the one on the right and continue on the left. Pass two more information signs about the forest and arrive at a road by a pond.

(9) Walk a few metres to the left along the road, then take the path on the left which goes around the pond on the right, then climbs up and leads to a track. Follow it to the right and you will immediately come to a road, which you should follow to the left.

Mountain bike trail no. 11

At the next intersection, find mountain bike trail marker no. 11 and turn right onto the tarmac lane. At the crossroads, turn left to reach the village of Picherande, then take the first street on the left. At the Coste-Rousset signpost, continue towards Picherande to quickly reach the car park (S/E).

A pleasant hike with varied landscapes. Quite muddy in the forest before the bog. Really nice to do and, best of all, you can set off on foot from the campsite.
Note that there is a large tree across the path at the start of the walk. It is impossible to go around it, so you have to make your way through the branches.
