Tour of the Font d'Urle Plateau, from Puy de la Gagère to Serre de Montué

This long circular route covers the different areas of the Font d'Urle Plateau and its pastures, mainly following the ridges that connect its two extreme peaks, the Puy de la Gagère and the Serre de Montué. It allows you to visit the main sites characteristic of this karstic landscape: the karstic cave des Cloches, the Double Arche, the Grotte du Berger and the Glacière de Font d'Urle.

Description of the walk

Font d'Urle can be reached from Die via the Col du Rousset and Vassieux-en-Vercors or from Saint-Jean-en Royans via the Col de la Machine. At the Chaud Clapier resort, take the road that leads to the site in the Font d'Urle mountain pastures (hotel, chalets, etc.). There are plenty of parking spaces on arrival.

(S/E) From the car park in front of the hotel, return to the access road (CD76b) for 300 m and turn right onto theGR®93.

(1) It climbs up the mountain pasture towards the east. It is not very clearly marked on the ground and crosses several similar paths: follow the markings carefully, gradually heading south-east.
After a tumulus with several cairns and before a small plateau covered with cairns, look for a trail on the left that cuts across the fence.

(2) Take this path to descend a small valley which turns right at the bottom. Les Scialets des Cloches are just on the left in a hollow at the edge of the forest.

(3) Visit the edge of the four Cloches (without going down as the climb back up is very technical) then return to the access path which climbs south-east to a beautiful sharp limestone pavement (cairns), after which you turn south to join theGR® and descend a little to the Pot de la Croix crossroads.

(4) Follow the path opposite, which climbs diagonally towards the Crête des Gagères. When you reach the ridge, where the path flattens out before descending, climb the grassy ridge on the right (few traces) to easily reach the summit of Puy de la Gagère.

(5) After enjoying the 360° view, retrace your steps along the fence and, at a grassy pass on the left, turn sharply to cross the small rocky ridge and descend into the meadow to the west, following the fence.

(6) At the foot of the slope, the path passes through Pas du Follet and continues along the edge of the cliff to a double arch marking the edge of a deep pit.

(7) Continue along the path beside the fence at the edge of the cliff, with a few ascents and descents, pass Pas Pascaud and join the "Sentier du Kartz" which leads to the wide Col de la Porte d'Urle.

(8) Cross the path to climb up to the pylons. Above the second one, a path descends on the south-west side to pass at the foot of the cliffs and cross level to the Grotte du Berger (the one on the left).

(9) After visiting the cave, continue crossing level under the cliffs at the altitude of 1658m. The path is less marked than before the cave and runs through scree about twenty metres below the cliff.

Cross over to a corridor that allows you to climb back up to the ridge. From there, a level path leads to the Chalet du Serre de Montué (pass to the left of a water reservoir so as not to disturb the shepherd and his sheep).

(10) The path, which follows theGR® 93, climbs diagonally to bypass the 1698m point to the Pas de l'Infernet.

(11) From the pass, go around the 1692m point on the right to climb up to the Col de l'Infernet.

(12) Leave theGR® towards the Plateau d'Ambel and turn right heading north. The tracks may vary depending on the passage of herds, so follow the most clearly marked ones: after a slight descent, go around the first hill (1685m point) on the left (west).

From the next pass, climb the main summit (1706m) either by following the tracks that go around it on the left and then back south, or directly up the grassy slope (less clear but easier tracks)

(13) From the summit, descend to the pass to the south and return to the path taken on the way up to the Col and Pas de l'Infernet. Descend to the reservoir at the Chalet du Serre de Montué.

(10) Continue down towards Font d'Urle on theGR® until you reach a crossroads.

(14) Leave theGR® trail downhill and take the path starting at the same level opposite. It passes near a watering hole. Continue either level or down a lower path, as the slope is marked with multiple tracks left by passing herds. Avoid going back up, but descend a little to follow the clearest track, which leads level back to the pylons at Porte d'Urle and then to the pass.

(8) From the crossroads at the pass, take the path directly opposite heading east, which joins the "Sentier du Karst". Take this path to the left to pass a protected chasm and climb northwards to the Glacière de Font d'Urle, which has been clearly visible for some time.

(15) Visit the Glacière: if heading east, return via the plateau at the western entrance and take the path that leads back to the Route de la Porte d'Urle, follow it to the right to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The Font d'Urle site lends itself to numerous routes for all levels. Although the proposed circular is a fairly complete tour of the plateau, it can be split into shorter routes, as the proximity of the Porte d'Urle departure point (8) makes it easy to return quickly.

The entire route is easily accessible (alpine pasture or ridge trail), except for the passage between (8) and (10) to visit the Grotte du Berger (9). To stay on easy terrain, simply follow the route described for the descent between (8) and (10), passing through (14). This makes the route accessible in winter with snowshoes or skis.

This circular was inspired by several hikes described by Pascal Sombardier in "Vercors secret: hikes off the beaten track" and by the route suggested by Gérard Barré on his Sentier-Nature website.

Worth a visit

The entire plateau is very open and there are unobstructed views from everywhere, particularly from the two peaks of Puy de la Gagère (5) and Serre de Montué (13), but also all along the ridge.

All the characteristic features of karst terrain can be seen: sinkholes, sharp limestone pavement, karstic caves, chasms... Four characteristic formations are visible:
- the karstic caves des Cloches (3): four chasms connected at the bottom. You can explore their edges carefully, but do not be tempted to descend (requires at least a short abseil), as the climb back up is difficult and technical (requires a pre-positioned rope and ascenders).
- l'Arche Double on the ridge (7): be careful of the verticality of the approaches. Visiting it requires a long abseil down the cliff.
- The Grotte du Berger (9): fairly easy to walk through for about 200 metres (with a helmet and torch) to admire its concretions (allow 3-4 hours).
- The Glacière de Font d'Urle (15): very popular because it is on the "Sentier du Karst" trail, it is easy to descend to the bottom; the eastern exit requires a small climb under a natural arch.

Throughout the mountain pasture, you will encounter herds of sheep, cows and horses roaming freely. Please respect the animals' peace and quiet and watch out for the sheepdogs protecting the sheep.
The livestock is kept in large areas enclosed by electric fences. Whenever a path crosses one of these areas, there is either a gate or a plastic handle nearby to open it: always close it behind you.

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A very beautiful hike! Lots of flowers at this time of year (late May). We couldn't find the fork leading to the karstic cave of the bells, but the rest was well described. We didn't visit the Shepherd's Cave: the path was a little difficult. It was a beautiful day and we saw Mont Blanc from the Pas de l'Infernet.

A very beautiful hike with varied landscapes and lots of flowers: fields of daffodils, globeflowers and gentians
Generally very few people except around Font D'Urle (as there are other shorter and easier routes).
A GPS is very useful, especially for reaching the karstic cave of the cloches and the Puy de la Gagère, as you have to leave the GR 93 and cut across meadows or a grassy slope.
The path that passes under the cliff to reach the Berger cave is relatively easy at first (between 8 and 9), but becomes much more difficult after the cave (between 9 and 10): narrow path through scree, often on a slope. To reach the summit, a short 3-metre climb is necessary, which is not difficult (3 B or C), but falling is nevertheless prohibited (less experienced climbers can be secured with a rope, but there are no anchor points).
On the plateau, there are a few more people and it is possible to climb other peaks that are not on the route to enjoy other views. For 2 additional peaks: 2 km more for an additional 100 m of elevation gain.
It is possible to cross the Font D'Urle glacier, but a small, easy climb is required at the exit.
Depending on the season, bring warm clothing as the plateau is very windy.

Beautiful hike overlooking the cliffs. I agree with the reviews about the shepherd's cave, which is only suitable for experienced hikers. It is better to make a round trip on the access path rather than turning right when leaving the cave, as the path is rocky and difficult, especially in hot weather.
Also, be careful of the sheepdogs, so when approaching the flock (sheep), go around them to avoid any trouble.
Otherwise, even in hot weather, there is a breeze along the cliff top path, which makes it easier to bear the sun. You can see eagles along this beautiful route.

The scenery is magnificent.

Clearly, this guidebook describes two rooms with two different atmospheres. The beginning is easy, family-friendly and without difficulties.
As soon as you take the path towards the cave, the group starts to split up.
The path through the scree is poorly marked, there are frequent rockfalls, and there are drops.
Some sections require downclimbing, which can be daunting for the less experienced.
Apart from that, the scenery is sublime and the atmosphere exceptional.
However, the last part is only suitable for experienced hikers who are comfortable in difficult terrain.
Thank you for the route!

The film of the hike (points 8 to 13) with the shepherd's cave
https://youtu.be/SyKVitVgLNo

The section after the shepherd's cave requires walking sticks: it is very steep and rocky and is only suitable for people who are not afraid of heights. See film!

Very busy, yes, except when you have to pass under the cliff. That's a serious and dangerous mistake!
I scouted the hike two days before accompanying my group of 17 people, all of whom are good walkers.
But with them, I went over the top. You'd have to be an idiot to take such a risk on a rocky slope.

A beautiful early morning walk with sunrise and magnificent light. Stunning scenery. Average signage but impossible to get lost: you navigate by sight.
The three bells are difficult to find. There are no signs. But it's worth the detour. Access to and exit from the shepherd's cave is too dangerous (but I was alone). It may be preferable to ensure that there are at least several people. The main attraction remains the view from the top of the cliffs.

It is far too dangerous to walk under the cliff to visit the shepherd's cave.
It is completely irresponsible to take a group of hikers along this route...
