Description of the walk

1.5 km after the village of Mestervik, on road 858, take Malangensveien, straight ahead at the hairpin bend (towards Mortenhals). Continue for about 7.5 km. About 50 metres before the entrance to the Malangen Resort hotel complex (on the left), take the gravel track that climbs up to the right. Pass a "lodging" for sled dogs and park in the car park a few metres further on. A map showing two walks is displayed at the edge of the track (Nikkavatnet Rundt and Nikkavannsmarka).

(S/E) Continue along the track to the right and head north-west to the shelters for canoeists and campers.

(1) Turn right and follow the lake on your right. Some of the wetlands have been fitted with duckboards, others have not... do your best to cross them.

(2) Descend to the lake shore and follow a path between the water and a rock face. Continue around the lake until you reach the junction you took on the way there.

(1) Turn right and follow the track to the starting point (S/E).

Practical information

The trail is not always clearly visible, especially on the eastern side of the lake. However, the terrain and vegetation do not prevent you from taking your own route to find the lake shore. Please note that the large red dots painted on the trees are not very reliable!

In the nearby area

As everywhere, at least in this part of Norway, the trails are neither signposted nor marked. It is therefore best to download a map of the area onto your phone and follow your route using the Visorando app (OSM-Rando maps).

Be sure to wear high, waterproof shoes, as some sections are waterlogged, especially in spring!
