Tour du Bouchet

During this walk, the great Bouchère Wood will be your companion. This hike takes you to explore the neighbouring “Ores” valley. Starting from Montsérié, a village rich in archaeological finds, it passes through beautiful Old Forests. An “Old Forest” is an ancient, mature forest: that is to say, it has been continuously forested since at least the mid-19th century. You will also discover Bayelle de Gazave, a vast and beautiful high-altitude clearing, surrounded by mountains.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park by the village hall.

(S/E) From the information sign, turn right and head towards Moussu, then Cascar. Walk to the Col de Bouchère.

(1) At the Col de Bouchère, follow the signs for Saut to the right, along the forest track leading into the woods. At the two junctions, turn right.

(2) At the top of the climb, leave the main track continuing straight ahead and take the small, fairly steep path on the left. Descend onto a wider track.

(3) At La Courade, turn right onto a wider, downhill track.

(4) When you reach a fork, you have two options:
- to the right, the route descends towards Gazave.
- to the left, the suggested route climbs towards Bayelle de Gazave (3.6 km return – a large clearing surrounded by mountains). Turn left onto the track towards Bayelle de Gazave. Continue uphill, straight ahead, until you reach the site.

(5) Return to the junction via the same route.

(4) Continue along the track opposite. After about 700 metres, leave the main track and take the path on the right to walk to the right of the stream.

(6) You’ll reach a small tarmac road; take it to the right. At the next bend, turn right onto the track and follow it until you come out of the woods.

(7) Leave the woodland and head down to the left into a clearing between two meadows. Continue straight ahead. The path reaches Saut at a crossroads.

(8) Take the D526 to the right and, at the bend, follow the GR®78 track straight ahead back to the village of Montsérié (S/E).
